SQ 005: The Missing Panther
Setting:
Location: Alexandria Residence
Time: During the time skip
Response to: SQ 005: The Missing Panter
NPC In-Charge: The Head Butler, Balthazar
Aim: Find Cerberus the Black Panther

It was a fine sunny day. And Rianne was grateful to have found a spare time to visit Ponomy City, to see her younger brother. It was a first after her busy schedule while training, and the first that the two of them would go out unsupervised. Everything had gone well and it was less stuffy without any guards tailing them. That was until they uncannily passed by the Training Order’s Office in Ponomy. There she somehow overheard a messenger inquired an officer, about sending a message to Antar, asking for assistance.

After a quick lunch with Yohann, she found herself lying to him. And instead of another fun filled afternoon wandering around Ponomy City with him, she was now faced with the giant gate of the Alexandria Mansion. Why she found herself right in front of the Alexandria mansion. That she doesn’t know. “Somehow I doubt Yohann will let this trip slide. I just hope he doesn’t piece it together soon enough...” Rianne muttered, while debating whether or not to call for the gatekeeper.

It made her worry if the person who sent the request would even let her in. Seeing as how she wasn’t dressed in her uniform, she could just pass off as a passerby. After all she did came here in Ponomy to wander. She did not anticipate to be caught up on a side quest. Hence she hadn’t really brought her weapon with her, or anything to signify that she was a Trainee of the Order. Well I didn’t really expected to come here… Nor do I even want to be recognized as a trainee in the first place... All that hard work on preparing and disguising gone to waste. she thought while keeping her rather short braided twin-tails in check. Well it’s better to be recognized here, than hanging around near the Fredeliz or Cruciane’s estate. That's the last place I want to be recognize right now.

Lucifer was happy that he found the request letter from the front board of the Main office. It was good excuse visit the Alexandria Manor. He want see if it still the same or it change after all these years. He won't be surprise to see Balthazar again and still the Head Butler since the last time he visited. Yeah, when I was 13 years old.

Walking down the cobblestone streets of the noble residences, up ahead he can see the vast gates of the Alexandria estate and manor. But what caught his attention is the petite blunette trainee standing in front and looking at the gates.

"She may have seen the letter of request." He muttered to himself. "Well the more the merrier right." Then he slowly approached the petite trainee with a positive vibe in mind. This will be an interesting visit.

When he finally found a bit of free time, Philip decided to go to Ponomy. He wanted to talk with some acquaintances from the old days when he traveled with trading caravans. The first place he chose was the noble houses district as every courier in the capital would be sent there at least once a week with a new order. Arriving at the gate of the Alexandria estate, he spotted other recruits waiting for something in front of the gate.

"Oh, hello" he started, with no better idea to commence the conversation. "Quite a crowd here. Are you coming in?"

He finished the question with a quieter tone, concluding that his colleagues from the Order might know all the influential people quite well. Otherwise, why would they visit such a place?

"Oh, hello. Quite a crowd here. Are you coming in?"

Lucifer looked at the new comer. It was the sole wand user of their batch. Philip Aventurra, he recalled his name, not that noticeable since he is the quiet type. He was glad that another person will be joining the search. The estate is vast so finding Cerberus will take a while if going solo.

"You here for the job request?" Lucifer asked. "Well if you here then it would be good for more us to help out. And the pay is good too."

He looked at the petite bluenette. "Hey Rianne." He greeted. "Are you coming in?"

Rianne's head was propped up by her right hand which was supported by her left arm. Indicating that she was in deep thought. And one of which was deciding whether or not, to proceed going inside the Alexandria estate. That she ended up not noticing her fellow trainees had already approached her. In fact she was startled when Lucifer called out to her.

"Uwahh..." came her awkward response. "Yeah?!?"

She turned to look at the direction of the voices and saw the red head Lucifer and dark haired Philip. Rianne smiled at them, as her mind replayed the conversation she just heard from them. They sure sound as if they're right at home, from what they just said.

Half of her mind wanted to go and leave, since her fellow trainees had arrived to answer the call of the quest. But she had already said yes, without really processing Lucifer's query. Now it was too late to turn back. I don't even know the particulars of that messenger's request in the first place... I wonder what I signed up for...

Lucifer's question surprised Philip who was rarely looking for additional jobs. He didn't really care about money, but still he knew well that an unpaid debt of gratitude is always useful when looking for intel.

"A job request? Why not, I could help" he tried not to give away his lack of knowledge. "I'll be going in right after you."

He decided to let Salvatore speak on his behalf as the man was way better accustomed to the etiquette of such houses. Still, Philip noticed that it would be funny to actually receive a request for help from the butler, not to deliver letters to him.

"Let's follow Mister Salvatore" he said with a blink to Rianne. "He looks as if he was born in that manor".

Aventurra hoped to avoid any awkward silence and to go straight into the action.

Even though she still can't manage to remember all the well known nobles. The Salvatores and The House of Alexandria was know to have a connection with each other, due to the Trontell Mines. So it was safe to assume Lucifer might know this place more than her or Philip.

Rianne couldn't help but laugh lightly in response to Philip's suggestion. Who knows, what if was true. "Yes" Turning her attention from Philip to Lucifer. She playfully smiled at Lucifer and said "Would you mind leading the way Mr. Salvatore?"

At least with these two around, the lack of being recognized as a trainee of the Training Order is solved. She thought. It might end up being fun going here after all. Sorry little bro.

"Thank you."

"Alright then." Lucifer said with a smile. He looked up at the huge gates of the Alexandria Estate. He felt a sense of nostalgia, it's been years since he set foot in this place. Too many happy memories were left here. Memories of their time together, exploring the estate, playing hide and seek in the maze with Cerberus, listening to Aunt Selene telling them stories at her rose gardens.

Yes, it was magical time for them back then. He hopes that they will return back to that time again. Breaking his own train of thought, he looked back at his companions and smiled. "Let me call the gatekeeper first." He said and approached the gates. "I hope is still the same gatekeeper from years ago."

"Carlos!" He bellowed. "Are you still here? Would you please open the gates."

Carlos the gatekeeper of the estate woke up form his short name. He snorted in disgust and irritation. The 40 something year old man was a little irritated that his nap was cut short. Who would make a call in this time of day? He thought and looked out of the window of his little gatekeeper's cottage. From their he can clearly see who are standing at the gates.

He clearly recognized that color of hair anywhere but was not sure which of the twins unless he walks over there for a closer look. Grabbing his keys and locking the door of his cottage behind him, Carlos walked towards the main gates. As he approached he is now sure that it was Lucifer who called him but as for his two companions, he doesn't recognized them.

"Long time no see Master Lucifer." He greeted the young lad. It has been years since he visited here. His other twin had visited months back but it would have been great if both of them visit together. He remembered them when they where children, always giving him a hard time and playing their little kid's pranks. "Are you here for a visit?"

"Long time no see as well Carlos." He said with a happy grin on his face. "It is great that you're still the gatekeeper. And well I am not here for a visit."

He tilt his head to gesture at his fellow trainees behind him. "I am here with my friends to help out a request that Balthazar sent in Antar." It was a good excuse for him to visit the place. He silently chuckled as he recall a memory where him and his brother, with Kisara in tow, pulled some silly pranks on the man when they were children.

"Oh, So your here for that." Carlos said and smiled. "Well let me open the gates then."

He took out his set of keys and opened the main gates of the estate to let the group in. "I am sure you still remember the way." He said to the tall red-head. Carlos silently chuckled since he knows that both Lucifer and his brother knows this place like the back of their hand. But there are some few changes in some places, so it will take some time to get reacquainted.

"Go on then you kids." He gestured them to go. "Can't keep the old butler waiting. He has been frantic since he sent the notice for this job."

He stepped back from the gates as the gatekeeper opens it with ease. Looking at Carlos he said his thanks. "Grazie, Carlos and yes I still remember the place." He said and added. "But I hope the place didn't change much in the last 10 years."

He and together with his twin and young cousin, explored estate in every way the can when they where children. Always discovering new places and secret hiding places. Yes it was fun time back then. Lucifer looked back at his two companions. "Come on guys it is a five to seven minute walk from the gate to the manor. Might as well need that short warm up." He explained and started to walk towards the mansion and gesturing them to follow.

Master Lucifer? Rianne tilted her head to the side. I guess he is well acquainted with this household. That's good, it would save a lot of trouble. she continued to muse while observing the small talk between Lucifer and the gatekeeper called Carlos.

"Thank you Mister." Rianne smiled before bowing her head in front of the gatekeeper. She then turned her attention towards her companions. Feeling relieved to be out of the open road.

"Is that so?" Rianne replied to Lucifer's explanation. "Then I guess, let's go." She turned to look up to Philip before briskly following Lucifer's stride.

Rianne was at awe glimpsing the scenery around them. This was the third Noble Household whose estate she has entered. And it has a very different charm from the Fredeliz or the Cruciane's.

Philip only nodded at how well Lucifer was treated by the butler. He didn't say a word during the short conversation and pretended not to know Carlos. It was sure that the old man wouldn't hold a grudge against that as they used to get straight to business during the rare deliveries Philip had made.

When Rianne looked at him, he afforded a little smile. Aventurra was not fond of Serene's liveliness, but he appreciated her ambitions in learning about medicine. Then, he followed a little behind the other recruits.

"What's the plan for when we reach the house, Master Lucifer?" he said with a blend of respect and irony.

Philip had an impression that becoming a plain recruit should be a demotion for a man who spent all his life in the noble houses. However, he knew that a person ready to take such a step down in the hierarchy would make a good leader. And it was nice to be able to roam freely through such a luxurious manor for the very first time.

He looked at both of his companions who are walking beside him. Lucifer tried to slow down to match their pace. He flushed a little when Philip called him like the Carlos the gatekeeper called him. “Please, just call me Lucifer guys.” He said. “The only people who ever called me or my brother that is the people working here in the estate. Until now, I still can't get used to it.”

“Back in Sabi or the mines in Trontell, all are in a first name basis.” He explained. “Stations in society or ranks of authority are disregarded in the mines. We treat each other as equals. My father taught us how to work hard and not to rely on being in the privilege life since he too came from a not so privileged life before he earned his wealth.”

During his little explaination to his companions, they were now at the main doors of the Manor. White polished columns showing of the balcony. The polished dark wood of the twin french doors shimmers a bit and the menacing dragon head door knocker looks like it's about to breath fire.

“Geez. I don't remember this little guy to be that evil looking.” Lucifer looked at the door with his chin prompt on his right hand. “Well it's been a while since I visit. Might as well knock.”

Grasping the door knocker, Lucifer knocked three times for good measure. He was sure it was loud enough for the Head Butler to hear.

Born with a silver spoon as well... Being a noble can be lonesome... Rianne mused as she listened to Lucifer's explanation for his request. She could only smile at the way Lucifer's father taught him and his brother that they weren't different from the common folk. It must have been rough, even so I'm sure it made them better men, than some spoiled noblemen. But I can't help but feel a little envy towards Lucifer... Keeping in mind one's status in society or ranks of authority were important in my family...

Even if their family consider societal ranks important, they still remained humbly close yet distant to the common folk. They after all serve them directly and indirectly, regardless of their ranks in life. Rianne grew up feeling estranged because of those. She was pretty much obliged to call people with titles "Mr." "Ms." "Sir". So calling others without a title still felt a bit odd for her. Unless of course they were family. It felt foreign, as being commonly called "Rianne" by non-relatives, a name which she isn’t quite used to.

I'm still just getting used to call Ms. Livi 'Livi', but calling her by that feels nice, even though she isn't Dany or Yoh. Maybe it won't be that bad calling Mr. Salvatore, Lucifer too. After all he requested it himself. Rianne mused while observing Lucifer as he talked. "That's quite a humbling story Mr. Sal- err... Lucifer. But I hope you don't mind if I sometimes slip up and call you Mr. Lucifer." she said sheepishly "My grandmother was very strict when it comes to social decorum. Noble or not." she shivered a bit remembering the old lady, while looking at the twin french doors.

"Awe but it still looks cute!" Rianne countered Lucifer's opinion about the dragon head knocker, swatting away the family related topic. "I wonder if it is a trend for the noble houses to have their signature animal as a design for their door knockers?" thinking her thoughts out loud as she admired the designof the dragon head. Truth be told Rianne was very fond of the eagle head knocker in the Cruciane mansion more than the wolf one in the Fredeliz, simply because of the craftsmanship in creating them. Remembering the myriad decorations that adorned the two houses she lived in the recent years, Rianne thought while continuing to look at the dragon head I wonder what the House known to hold trade and commerce of Altrus at their grasp, will brandish inside.

"Trontell mines you say?" said Philip with a clear note of respect now.

Quite a few merchants had complimented the toughness of the people living in that region. Now, it appeared obvious that the most reasonable thing to do in the Order was to follow Lucifer. And that decision was to be tested a moment later, as soon as they entered the manor.

Aventurra noted that the architect who designed the house must have been particularly skilled. He had rarely had people investing their time or money in something as impractical as art in high regard. Still, the little figure of the dragon demonstrated knowledge of old writings as well, as its appearance agreed with all the legendary descriptions.

"Cute or evil, whatever..." he cut the dispute of the other two short. "If they really exist is an important matter. Anyhow, I can hear somebody coming to open the door for us!"

The click of Balthazar's steps echoed throughout the silent receiving hall of the manor. Passing the grand staircase he walked straight to the main doors of the manor. Effortlessly pulling one of the huge french doors open; Balthazar peeked and saw three people standing outside but what caught him was the familiar height and crimson red hair of the man closest to the door.

"Why! Master Lucifer." He greeted the tall man and looked up to him and smile. Despite being the average height of five foot nine, the younger Salvatore still towers him like his older twin. He opened the door even wider for them to see a glimpse of the interior of the receiving hall. "It's been years. Your brother also paid a visit here a fortnight ago. I do hope that the two of you will visit here together. Like you did back when you where children."

He looked at the young man's other two companions. "My! So you three are the trainees of the Order who answered my request." He said to them. "Well, come on in so I will brief you all." He stepped back to give them way to enter the manor.

"Hey Balthazar old man." He greeted happily at the old Head Butler of the House. He is surprised on how gracefully he aged. Lucifer recalls that the old butler would be 50 years old by now. "I still can't get used to be called master. And yes Loki told me he paid a visit here and I do hope that we will come and visit together next time."

He stepped in as Balthazar giveaway for them to enter. He observed the grand receiving hall of the manor. The elegant grand staircase, the rich architecture of the place is still the same as he remembered. A mixture of Romanian and Greek architecture. He walked up to the center of the hall and looked up at the huge chandelier above, seeing the grand fresco[1] painting above. It was mural of the great ancestor of the Alexandria ridding a great black dragon above and smite all his enemies from below.

"Wow, the changed the chandeliers," He said to himself with a whistle. "That painting still amazes me every time."

He can still remember the tales his mother and Lady Selene once told them when they were children. Before the Alexandria House became a noble house, a legend about the very first Alexandria rode a Dragon to protect his family and those under his protection. It was a time of war back then. He smiled as he recalled the tale.

Lucifer shifted his thoughts from the memories of his visits here, he turned to look back at his companions as they followed him from behind.

"Thank you!" Rianne bowed and curtsied towards the butler whom Lucifer addressed as Balthazar, before going inside the receiving hall. 'Proper decorum must be kept in mind when visiting a household, and no matter lord or servant of the House one must remain humble and polite.' Or so her grandmother Irina taught her.

She couldn't help but follow the line of sight of the red-hair man in front of her. If dragons were real in the past, then surely the Griffon the symbol of the House of Cruciane were once real too. Was all Rianne could think, as her eyes widen in amazement. The fresco was beautiful and near life-like.

Yes! Dragons were magnificent! Huge fire breathing serpent-lizard like creatures, which could probably take her breath away. But of course, she hasn't seen one, unlike the eagle and the lion that make up the chimera like symbol of her house. She even thought Griffons could be possible, until she learned the natural order of things. Like humans pair with other humans, so were lions with lions and eagles with eagles. And that Lion would probably eat an eagle if it has its claws on it. But Rianne still enjoyed believing in mythical creatures though, until they were proven true or false.

Even from the distance, she could tell how enamored the painter must have been with his/her subject. Whoever the painter of this fresco must be so proud... she thought. And it was obvious to any onlookers that's Rianne's eyes shine in delight as her sight was glued to the ceiling. "Indeed it's magnificent..." Rianne whispered.

Rianne was drove back to nostalgia, thinking of the many tales her Grandfathers had told her during her bedtimes. About dragons, knights, and heroes of yore. Nearly forgetting that there were other things yet to be seen in the vast mansion, and of course their quest.
