Setting:
Response to: SQ004: A Letter Of Heart
Location: Antar Port
Aim: To deliver Camille’s letter.

I wonder how long it'll take for any message to reach its recipient from here. Auris wondered as he walked up to the port, holding the librarian's letter firmly in one of his hands. Just this morning, he'd had some spare time on his hands, which he had again happily chosen to spend in the library. He had frequented the place ever since he had first found it, making lots of progress on a few informative books. Just now he had even been able to actually finish one of the thinner ones. As a result, he was met with that sweet feeling of productivity, of progress, which lifted his mood even more.
Differently than usual, however, Camille had approached the trainee after a while, with a single request he was gladly willing to accept: dropping off a letter at the mailbox. Without so much as a second thought, he had agreed and gone his way.
Not only did this give him a chance to help someone; it also was an opportunity for him to check whether he had any replies to his own latest letter yet. It hasn't been too long, but who knows? His companion was a hard worker and usually replied directly, for as far as he knew. However, perchance the letter Auris had written to him hadn't even been delivered yet. It was all possible.

Reaching the mailbox, the recruit checked the front and back of the letter out of habit, as if to reconfirm it was adressed correctly. Then just when he was about to post it, he turned the letter back around --
only to have it meet a gust of wind that suddenly blew the paper away from between his fingers, towards the sea.

..Huh? Hey!

Quickly lunging forward over the balustrade, he made a reach for the letter in an attempt to catch it. He was able to touch it with two fingers, but it remained out of his grasp as it flew away further, inevitably heading towards the water.
Oh, no.. Oh no no no! I can't let it--
In the heat of the moment, he set foot on the railing and lifted himself to the other side, carefully standing on the thin edge of the platform as he held on with one hand and leaned forward to catch the letter with the other. Finally, much to the trainees relief, he was able to just in time get ahold of the item before it would continue to fall to its impending doom.

.. Got it. Were the first and only words to sound in his mind. Phew.

He sighed, feeling the tension fall off his shoulders. He hadn't messed up.. the letter was perfectly safe now. Next time however, he noted to himself, be more careful with the wind around here. It's a port: this won't be the last time you face it. Carefully pulling himself back, he moved his feet in preparation to climb back over the balustrade.

As soon as he tried, however, the trainee was met with a rush of adrenaline when he accidentally misstepped; his shoes losing grip on the edge of the platform at once. "Oh wh-- Ah!"
Startled, he struggled to regain it -- which only served for him to hit one of his knees -- before he slipped further, fell, and suddenly found no more but the sea a few meters below him, his entire body hanging on to the one single hand that was still clasped around one of the railing's bars.

...?!!

Unable to say or do anything, he was struck with nervosity and perhaps even fear of the threatening blue waves beneath him. Don't look down! Don't.. The recruit had no idea how deep the water was at this point, but he was pretty certain those railings weren't there for no reason.
He swallowed, trying to get his thoughts straight. He had to get back up. Quickly.
"G-guys? Anyone?!" He exclaimed. Taking a deep breath, the trainee listened closely for any replies, sincerely hoping he wasn't alone out there.

It was a fair weather here in Antar. The sea breeze was very comforting. Open sea, the sounds of the birds of prey flying above and the fishermen going out to have the catch of the day. Yes it was a fair and peaceful here but Loki can't relax after the message they received from the Main Base.

Let us hope that General Amedea's mission will be a successful one. He thought. We won't know until a fortnight since it will take 7 days to travel to Tomichi on horse.

Loki is more worriedsome on what if Kisara will go to missions like this even though she is in the Defence Unit. He still hopes that she won't have missions like that but if she does he will have to accompany her whether she likes it or not.

As for Loki being in Antar port. He was about to send a letter to his parents just to tell him how he and his brother is. He doesn't write much to them in his activities but since Lucifer is now here well it's his duty as the oldest to make sure their parents know how they are while they are here in Antar.

As he approached the Antar Post he heard a voice somewhere at the railings. He looked at the railings and saw a hand holding on the lower part of the railings. He blink just to be sure if the sea breeze isn't fogging his brain. Knowing that someone is in dire need of help, he dashed towards the railings and towered over to the person who is hanging for dear life.

Loki recognized the person is the young trainee Auris Soliphir. Looking at him and down below, Loki remembered in Soliphir's application that he hates water and doesn't know how to swim. He gazed back at Auris, "Need a hand Soliphir?" He said in a calm voice as not to make the kid even more afraid of the water bellow.

Auris couldn't recall ever having been so happy to see somebody show up. Once more he found himself relieved, even though he was well aware that he wasn't yet safe. Should things go wrong, should the railing slip away between his fingers, the situation could still take a turn for the worse; but at least right now, somebody would be around to help him prevent this. Hadn't the advisor been around to hear him, the whole deal could just have become a much more serious problem.

"Yes! Yes, thank you!" He replied gratefully towards Loki, albeit still nervous. Normally, the lime-haired youth would've refused to admit he needed somebody else's help, but at this point he couldn't care less. In fact, it didn't so much as occur to him. He was genuinely thankful.
He forced a smile, and carefully lifted the hand in which he carried Camille's letter, slowly extending it upwards. "Here, this--" he began, trying to clear his voice of tension. "this needs to be safe. If I can get this out of my hands.."
He didn't finish his sentence, but he was confident the advisor would understand his intentions. If he had both hands free, he'd have more to hang onto, and the situation would be just that little bit safer. Then, he could worry about getting back up again, one way or another.

Looking at the look of relief in Auris' face, Loki smiled down at the trainee. He took the letter that the greenette was holding out to him. He guessed that was something important since he prioritized it before his own safety. Loki tucked the letter in his breast pocket for temporary safe keeping.

"Okay Auris, the letter is now safe." He assured the young man and he bend down from the railings, using it as a support and reached out to Auris with ease. "Now give me your hand so I can lift you up from there okay."

Just because they were training to fight demons, doesn't mean they couldn't have some rest and relaxation. And Rianne for one, won't miss these rare chances. So her first agenda for the day was swimming in the sea, not only to relax but also train her leg muscles. In doing so, she was hitting two birds with one stone. As the sun was already starting to climb up high in the sky when she decided to head back, for some hearty meal.

She was merrily walking down the port area, from the nearby inlet she was earlier this morning. She greeted back the familiar faces that kept greeting her. She didn't particularly noticed the curious and odd looks they had given when they would ask her if she was okay. But then again their looks were reasonable. Who wouldn't question someone you knew, who was walking down the street barefoot, with a towel covering her tattered coat[1]. Not to mention she looked soaking wet, and her slippers slung over her back.

One would think, she was either robbed or harassed, even if she was a trainee. But alas, Rianne wasn't really conscious or bothered at her current look. To her it was a habit walking barefoot after swimming in the beach. Just minus the tattered coat.

Maybe I'll drop off this letter for Yohann, since I'm already here. Rianne mused, as she walk towards the direction of the mail post.

A very curious sight caught her eyes from the distance. It was the adviser Loki leaning over the balustrade. What is he doing? Rianne thought as she tilted her head, to see what the read-head was trying to do. But due to the man's physique blocking her view, she didn't quite see anything. Clearing her throat "Good day Ser Loki! How are you?" Rianne called out with a smile, as she approached him.

[1] - The coat she was wearing was tattered, due to being used as bandaging during Don't Tread On Me.

Still leaning over the railings and a hand reaching out to Auris, the tall red-head looked on what was greeting him from behind over his left shoulder. There he saw the familiar blue shaggy hair of his student. He blinked and smiled.

"I am doing fine, Rianne." He answered. "But I think I need your help in pulling up your fellow trainee here."

He pointed down where Auris is hanging for his dear life.

Rianne didn't hesitate to run towards her mentor, after he called for her assistance. And leaned over the railing, well sort of. The height of the railing was just bellow her chest, so she couldn't really bend over. But it was alright, she could still the green head hanging for his dear life.

"Oh my..." With out really thinking properly, she lifted her body to the lowest bar of the railing, hoping to get an added height to bend over. "Hang in there Auris, we'll help you get up!"

She was already bending her torso, while her lower body was leaning over the railings, trying to clamp her body to it. Her right hand was keeping her balanced, and hopefully secured.

"Uhh... " Rianne paused as she realized her outstreched arm was still quite a distsnce from Auris. "Grab my hand after Sir Loki pull you up a bit..."

"Alright, alright.." The trainee replied to Loki as he tried to steady himself. Now that he was holding the railing with both his hands, it felt incredibly dangerous to take one off again.
Below him, he could hear the waves rushing and crashing almost menacingly. Almost as if they were waiting for him to lose his grasp and fall down, so they could envelop him and take him to whatever horrors were lurking beneath the surface. There, where would have no control. And there where nobody could hear him should he cry for help.
Auris swallowed. Stop it. He told himself, trying hard to push the thoughts away.

Just as he was about to grab the advisor's hand, he heard another voice, one that he was quickly able to link to the other trainee that appeared above him a short moment later.
Again, he found himself very happy to see someone; now, two people would be able to try and keep the situation on the rails.
In a manner of greeting, Auris tried to force another smile -- but his ability to fake things had been used up for now, resulting in it being a rather sorry attempt. Still, he was certain it would at least show his appreciation.

He nodded at Rianne's instructions as soon as she had finished speaking. "Yes, got it." He answered confirmatively. "Okay, wait.."
Once more, he reached for Loki's hand and now grabbed it securely. He knew one of the next things would be to let go of the railing, but as of now, the idea still scared him. Instead, he decided to wait for instructions in hopes of something else; even if he knew the others could very well tell him to do just that.

Annoyed. Rianne was annoyed at her weakness. If only she could reach just a bit more, she could grab Auris' hand that was holding the railing. The green haired trainee wouldn't have to worry of letting go, trying to grab her hand.

Just a bit... she thought, as she tried to extend her reach even more, by tiptoeing on the railings. Lowering her body more precariously on the other side."Just a little bit further!" She murmured. With all her might she grabbed hold of Auris' hand. "Gotcha!" Rianne declared triumphantly.

Rianne's clothing caught a migthy gust of wind blowing towards the sea. Like a kite, she was blown off balance towards the other side. In a split second her hand that was holding Auris was her only tether of safety. As her body swayed like a pendulum her fall. Her cloak and towel continued to flap like broken wings as the winds kept blowing through them.

Loki feels a little relived now that he has a firm hold on Auris' hand on his right. He has to keep from using his left arm since it is still not fully healed even though he is not feeling any pain in a while now but he can't take any chances now. Lucky that Rianne is here to help out He thought then a mighty see breeze blew in their way and at the corner of his left eye he saw Rianne flew off to the other said of ther railings.

"Merda!" He cursed, trying to keep his hold on Auris firm, Loki reached over and grabbed Rianne's cloak before the wind blows her further away. Ignoring the slight throbbing pain on his left shoulder. "Well, this day is getting a lot more eventful by the minute."

"You guys okay?" He asked them. "Going to pull you two out but I need your help too since it will be hard for my to pull you two out at the same time."

Rianne wasn't confident that her left arm was enough to stop her fall. What if she ended up prying Auris' hand off the railings. She'd end up putting him in an even more precarious situation. But it should be fine if she let go, another dip in the water won't hurt. It won't be bad if I fall on the water... I can still swim.

Expecting to feel the cold seaspray, her eyes flew open when she felt a searing pain on her shoulders instead. Looking down beneath her, the sea was inviting her to come between, the rough waves and the sea walls' embrace. Okay... That's going to be a rough swim... she gulped warily. All she could do for now was to tilt her head up, in order to get a glimpse of who or what kept her hanging.

Verrekt! Rianne's eyes widen as she mentally cursed. The end of her cloak was caught by her mentor with his left hand. Halting her earlier nosedive. He shouldn't be putting much pressure on that arm! Her thoughts were cut short when she heard Loki asking if they were alright.

"I'm fine. Thank you." She answered Loki's question with a sheepish smile. Rianne was hanging face front towards the blue horizon. Feet dangling in midair while her hand still awkwardly holding onto Auris. . "I have a good view of the sea, from here. You can save Mr. Soliphir first."

As soon as Rianne's extended hand was in reach, Auris took a deep breath. Come on, he told himself. Don't be a coward. Let go of these railings.
Finally pushing himself to do it, he tightened his grip on Loki's hand -- quite literally the only thing he could hang onto -- to the point it could even be considered painful, and then finally allowed the bars to slip away between his fingers. His weight shifted and he began swaying, something that immediately sent his fears racing again. He grabbed Rianne's hand as quickly as he could, assuring a new balance.

The balance didn't last long, however; for the blue-haired trainee was suddenly blown over the balustrade by another gust of wind, and Auris found himself frozen in shock when he held on and was suddenly pulled down at one side. The tug on his arm almost caused his grasp to slip, but he had managed to hold it. And here, yet again, their safety was hanging onto one single point.

In a thin wave of panic, he cried out for Loki, hoping dearly that the advisor would not let Rianne and him go or fall. He did all he could to hold onto both of the others firmly, but his hands were becoming clammy, and he couldn't tell if they were trembling or not.
He didn't even hear the question about whether they were okay anymore; all he heard were the wild waters beneath them, and his own mind fighting itself.

Merda, this is really an eventful day. He thought as he felt another throb of pain from his left shoulder as he keeps hold on both trainees. Loki knows he can't pull them up at the same time because 1; he maybe strong but not that strong and 2; he has an injury that may weaken him a little. His only hope is a good old adrenaline rush to kick in to numb the pain.

"Okay you two," He started and gazed at Rianne's figure. "I will try pulling you up first Rianne so you can grab hold on the railings. Once I know you're securely holding on the railings then I will pull Soliphir up."

He hopes that there won't be anymore surprises for them in store. The Gods are maybe playing with them.

W-wait me f-first?!? Rianne's thoughts screamed in alarm. It’s not that she doesn’t trust her mentor. She just doesn’t trust what is tethering her to him. Unlike the towel that got blown away during her fall. Her already tattered cloak can’t even be considered a reliable excuse for a rope. The force that Loki will use to pull her up would definitely cause the already loose seams to tear. And it didn't help that her right arm was starting to feel sore as it tries to remain arched, hooking herself on the cloak’s right arm hole. Along with her arm that remained clasped by Auris was raised up high, and the left arm hole had already slid up to her elbows.

Since a dive in the water, shouldn’t be scaring her at all. The fear that was starting to creep in, came out of nowhere. Making Rianne nervous than she normally would be. The rising tide and the rough winds are making some nasty waves, plus being this close to the seawall spells danger. Getting slammed against the dock’s seawall isn’t an event, Rianne would really want to experience any time soon, or she had hoped. Why does the sea have to be this rough at this time... And during a flood tide too…

Feeling an immediate sense of danger, Rianne’s senses were starting to kick into an overdrive. Bit by bit, she could feel her cloak was starting to rip from her weight, along with the fear emanating from Auris' tight and clammy grip. "S-sir Loki l-let go of the cloak!" Rianne tried bravely to call out. "You too Auris... L-let g-go of my hand!" Even if she could slide off her cloak, the tight grip of the green haired trainee will prevent her from diving. And she didn't like the idea of injuring them any further, for being an added weight. "I can swim after all!"

Something inside of Auris found it very appealing to follow Rianne's instruction. To let go and release part of what was weighing him down, reducing the risk. Still, he immediately battled the thought, his morality not allowing him to listen.
"Letting go?! Have you-- have you SEEN what's below us?!" He reacted, stubbornly holding on. "It's.. No! You tried helping me, so now I'll help you. Not open to question!"
Having taken on this new attitude, it briefly served to return part of his courage; but sadly it wasn't long-lived, for one push of the wind was enough to make it waver again.

His arms were beginning to hurt, but he couldn't care less. Giving in to gravity would be the last thing he would do at this point. The last.. The very last.
The recruit took a deep, trembling breath. The words kept repeating in his head, gradually taking on another meaning. It would literally be the last thing he'd do, were he to let go. The last thing he could ever do. After that, the only thing left waiting for him would be a long drop to death's depths raging below him..
The only thing he could hope for was that the rocks bordering the sides would make it quick.

With a shock he jolted out of his nightmarish thoughts, suddenly realising how they were still hanging here, and how the seconds kept crawling by. It was still left undecided; would they fall, would they make it? The uncertainty poisoned his mind, the tension sending it racing in a million directions. Finally unable to handle the suspense, a flicker of despair lit up in his eyes before he suddenly cried out again, his voice unstable with fear. "Do something!" He called out powerlessly. "Please!"

Rianne was starting to feel really nervous hearing Auris' rebuke. She knows what's down there, some rocks and tide poles carved out of rocks, which usually can be seen during low tides. They'd be peeking out of the water when the sea was calm during high tides, unlike now, she can barely see them. They were the things that she was nervous getting impaled by if she jumped and didn't correctly gauge their positions.

"Uh-oh. . ." was the only thing Rianne could utter as her right arm collapsed on her and slid off the coat's arm hole, from the slight push of the wind. She new her arm was already tired from swimming for hours earlier but not this much. Oh God! Rianne internally shrieked as her body swung to the side and lightly slammed against Auris.

Her left arm sleeve had again slid up her arm and stopped by wris, and a very visible tear near it. "Verrekt!" Rianne cursed seeing the big tear on her cloak made by her swing. Her heart was pounding very fast. Never in her life did she felt so afraid of gusty winds and the swirling water underneath her. Or so she could currently remember.

Being like 7 feet from the water, she was able to surmise the tide staves. And it looks very very bad for them, too close for comfort Rianne would say. If we fall, could we avoid the tide staves? And manage to swim against the waves flowing inwards?! She was starting to feel insecure of her ability to survive this with minor bruising, and lost her temptation to jump anymore.

Once again her life was in someone elses' hands. Literally. Like a small mouse stuck in a drowning ship Rianne squeaked "... help ..."

"Cazzo!" He cursed as their situation is getting out of hand. He felt Rianne's cloak is starting to tear. Loki think of something and fast! He thought to himself and started to look around their area and saw a small cliff side just 4 feet away and 3 feet down from Rianne if his calculations of the distance is correct.

Rianne could jump there and be safe for a while as I pull Auris and get some rope to pull her up from there. Thought and hope this will work. He believes that Rianne can jump to that distance easily. Well she is my student after all and I have to take pride on that.

"Rianne." He called her. "Look at your left, see that cliff side just 4 feet away from you and 3 feet down." He explained to here as he use his chin to point that direction. "I want you to jump over there to safety before your cloak will rip off. Once I know your safe then I will pull Soliphir and then next you once I will find a rope to pull you up. Okay?"

"And as for you Soliphir." He said to the young man. "Just keep calm and don't look down. I can feel the sweat of your palms."

Fear was setting in, and was clouding Rianne's usually calm mind. Stop it Ria! It'll be fine! Just calm down and think! The water won't kill you easily! Hearing her name she looked up to her mentor, feeling a little relieve seeing him still composed despite the curses she heard. See Sir Loki is there. Things are gonna be okay... Calm down Ria... She followed his line of sight as he started to instruct her.

Glistening from the sea spray, she could see the narrow ledge Loki was pointing out. She'd be safe there lest she slips from the slippery surface. 4 feet left and 3 feet down... And barely a feet wide... shaking her head at the worse case scenarios her fear was feeding into her mind. Nee![1] You can do this! It's an easy jump!

"Ja![2] I see it!" Rianne called back to her mentor, after analyzing her small safety ledge. "Please hold on for a little bit longer. And let go once I'm free." Turning her head to Auris she added. "Ja! Calm down Auris Sir Loki is there! On the count of three let go of my hand okay?! It's going to be alright!"

Every second that pass by, she could feel the tear in her cloak getting wider. It won't take long before it will snap. Every second was crucial, she couldn't wait for Auris' protest of agreeing or disagreeing.

Taking a deep breathe, she began counting, putting the plan into action. "One!" Rianne tried to wiggle her arm to raise the arm hole above her wrist. And flimsily trying to sway her body.

"Two!" Rianne forcefully yet clumsily swung her body to the right trying to gain a bit of momentum. I hope he heard me. I can't get snag at a critical moment like this.

"Three!" Rianne unclasped her hand from Auris, as she swings back to his direction. Hoping the green hair will let go. And she'd be free to swing using her cloak as a rope. That might just give her enough momentum and angle to propell her towards the ledge.

Note:
[1] Nee/Neen - 'No' in Dutch.
[2] Ja - 'Yes' in Dutch.

Just keep calm and don't look down.
The lime-haired trainee did all he could to follow Loki's advice, but after Rianne had lost her coat at the right and had swung them out of balance again, he found it hard to even try. His mind still restless, his breathing quiet and shallow; everything reflected his failed attempt to compose himself.

Then, Auris heard the advisor come up with a new idea. A cliff.. A jump to safety.
From the corner of his eyes, he could see the ledge in question, and he pictured the drop Rianne would have to make to reach it -- a decision he immediately regretted when it made him feel even more at unease.
Chances she would reach it were small, and the ground would undoubtedly be slippery and treacherous. Just the sheer idea of having to make the jump sent his heart racing with fear.

He opted to object again, but Rianne seemed to have already agreed to the plan, and had even begun catching momentum to prepare for the drop. "Wait!" He still tried, but his exclamation was in vain. Barely a few seconds later he felt the other trainee loosen her grip, and all he could do was clench his teeth and look away as he found himself forced to do the same.
A weight was literally lifted off him as soon as they both let go -- but relief was now further out of reach than ever.

Instinctively and without even noticing, he tightened his clasp around Loki's wrist even more, to the point it rendered his knuckles white. Had the situation been different, it would have looked as though he was trying to crush the other's arm.
Please tell me you made it, please tell me you made it.. Auris repeated to himself, but he didn't dare to look.
If anything, he would not be able to bear the responsibility for having someone critically wounded -- or perhaps worse -- yet another time.

As Auris let go of her hand, Rianne tightly gripped her cloak with her left hand. She dangled from side to side like a pendulum without a direction. The cloak twisted and turned in protest and bit by bit the seams broke at the her weight and light movements. Her momentum was definitely broken. In a last ditch effort, Rianne forcefully willed her right arm to push her body side way away from the seawall. It was a weak push, but she started moving sideways.

With every movement she made, the seams of her cloak were shredding. Rianne has no more time to wait for the right momentum, the right angle and the right moment to let go, that could ensure her a secure landing on the ledge. As the cloak swing to her left side, it finally snapped. Rianne was sent flying to the left towards her intended direction. But the force of the momentum wasn't enough, to plant her feet safely on the rocky ledge. Realizing there is no way she could land on her feet at her current distance. Rianne tried so hard to bend her torso and arms forward hoping to at least grab the edge of the ledge.

Is it over? Rianne prayed as she felt her movements had stopped with a 'thud!'. She could feel the burning sensation on her skin from the scratches her landing had caused her. Opening her eyes, that had involuntarily closed on her impact. Sure enough it wasn't one of her most graceful landings. But Rianne made it. Well part of her anyway. Her elbows managed to hook her upper body on the ledge, while her forearms prevented her to fully face plant herself or slip of on the edge of the ledge.

Pulling her upper body up safely on the ledge with all the strength her current aching arms could muster. The ledge was barely enough to accommodate her up close. But Rianne couldn't careless that her legs and feet were still dangling off the ledge. Or the splashes of saltwater washing over her as tall waves break against the seawall. She felt dead beat, but she was safe. For now.

She merely waves her right arm hoping to signal her mentor that she was now safe fine. The same wave she uses to signal him that she was at her limit during their lessons. That simple wave that screamed she's raising the white flag of surrender, when she finally runs out of breathe to speak during her training with him. Rest! I need rest!

Maybe I should've rested longer before I headed back earlier... My body is tired. Rianne's back was facing her companion, as she laid down nearly motionless. Except for the rise and fall her back, as her heart was still beating rapidly and her breathing was still erratic. "My heart should start getting used to these heart racing activities by now..." Rianne huffed in a weak voice.
