Setting:

Response to SQ004: A Letter of Heart
Location: Antar Port
Aim: To deliver Camille’s letter.
Time: A Day before start of training of Batch 003

It was another fine day in Antar, and Livi had dropped by the library. As she arrived, Camille who couldn't leave her post had asked for her letter to be dropped off at the mailbox by the port. Livi who was free at that time agreed and went to the port.

On the way, "The people here are really busy that they couldn't even visit their homes." she muttered "I also can't go home yet. Then again, what home? I'm … alone now…" she looked down and gloomy "I still have Uncle Lyall but… it's not the same." though she was fairly fond of him, his presence only served to be a minor comfort to her. Having lost both parents at the onslaught of the attack of the demons, she had become distant. However she still puts on her cheery act to avoid the loneliness. She knows that its not what her parents would have wanted so she acts tough despite the loneliness that weighs in her heart. She's trying to suppress the memories to make the days bearable.

At the port, she immediately went to the mailbox and dropped off Camilles's letter. "It's actually hard for Camille, working here and not being able to be with her family." she cast a lonely gaze at the sea. "At least she still has them." her heart was feeling envious. With nothing else to do, she walked near the edge of the sea. At the spot where there was no one else, she stared at the sea. Letting her mind wander off as a tear slid down her face.

Hidden behind some boulders Rianne was sleeping peacefully. The sound of the wind and the rushing waves had lull her to sleep, after swimming in the nearby inlet. The war against demons seems so far away, this momentary peace of hers. But she needed this to calm her thoughts. The events starting from the time she stepped into Antar up until was hectic and a bit grueling. And she's hell bent on cherishing every moment of peace, she could find.

She had woken from the presence that had lingered for some time now. Cloaking herself with the towel she brought. She sneaked up the rocks in order to see the person that had woken her peace. By chance, she was able to see the tear that had slid down her partner's face. Livi... What perchance had brought a tear to fall on that usual lovely smiling face...?

But it was not for her to simply meddle on people's affairs. So she quietly slide down the rocks and back to her original spot. But instead of lying down, she simply sat on the sand and leaned back at the rocks. Hoping the sounds of the sea would return her to sleep. And bury what she just saw in the closet memories. She closed her eyes while facing the sea, waiting for sleep to come once again. I'm not sure Livi would wish to talk about what caused that tear to fall... maybe it's best I just keep what I saw a secret.

Rylen slowly picked his way towards Antar Port, a letter he was meaning to send to his family clutched in his left hand.

It had been a while since he'd last heard from them and he had already been feeling quite homesick. Not that he'd told anyone about it, but it was there. The gnawing feeling of loneliness in his chest was starting to become unbearable especially at nights, when he lay alone in his room in total silence. It has been around a month since he'd started training here in Antar and he was still trying to get used to the silence of his room whenever he tries to sleep.

He was used to hearing his siblings' snores in the room, and even his father's from the other room for, unlike the dormitory, their house had thin walls. You could say it has become his personal lullaby.

Rylen chuckled to himself as he remembered his father's loud snores. It was always used by his older brothers to cover their sounds whenever they wanted to escape at night in order to have a tryst with their maidens.

It was always funny to see his brothers tiptoeing off in time with their father's snores.

Reaching the port, Rylen cleared his thoughts as he turned to where he remembered the mailbox was located. He was surprised however, to see the back of a familiar figure standing not far from his goal, looking out to the sea. 'I guess I'm not the only one with the idea to send letters this morning.' Rylen mused as he approached the mailbox to drop his letter in.

"Good morning, Livi." Rylen greeted when he was near enough in order to alert her of his presence.

Livi was lost in her thoughts and did not pay attention to anything else around her. She indulged in the memories she had suppressed for awhile. Not expecting anyone to approach her, she continued looking at the sea while some tears escaped from her eyes. Her heart was aching as the memories of her father and mother when they were travelling and the things they taught her flooded her mind.

Then suddenly a familiar voice greeted her. She was startled and glanced at the approaching person. Realizing there were still tears on her face, she immediately looked the other way and wiped them with her hands and sniffled. "Oh um Rylen, good morning as well." after she was sure that she had wiped her tears, she turned back to him with a forced smile. "So what brings you here?" she asked hoping he wouldn't notice. 'Of all times, why now? I don't want anyone to see me cry or be like this.' The pain was still there so she couldn't be her usual cheery self. His arrival was too sudden and she couldn't look him in the eyes. So she looked down and was blinking her eyes trying to hold back her tears.

While waiting for his answer, she was trying to calm herself to put back her usual happy face. "I-I just came by to drop off the letter of Lady Camille to her family." she said still looking down. 'Family…' she thought as her heart continued to ache. 'I thought I was over this already? Livi, you weakling. Stop crying! Especially if someone else is around.' she berated herself mentally.

Whether her other sense were strong when her eyes are closed, or simply because the wind is blowing her way. But the years spent of taking care Yohann as a baby, her ears was accustomed in picking her brother's slightest cries. Sometimes even to the slightest ones like the owlets back then in the dorm. She could imagine Livi was crying from the murmurs of the wind was blowing her way. Making her eyes open, hoping not to see the image from the back of her eyes. She was a sucker for tears, but at the same time wasn't as good at relieving them unlike her brothers. The thought of her brother and the thought of Livi crying, had only reminded Rianne of the vast distance separating her from her siblings, by simply looking at the sea.

"Ria don't leave me..." was Yohann's plea, the last time she spent a night with him.[1] It simply mirrored her pleas towards Daniel when they were younger. Making her feel that she was becoming more like Daniel now. Able to put his siblings feelings at a an arm’s length to keep them safe. After seeing her younger brother's tears, she could not put into words her thoughts of guilt. But she has to let it out. In a barely audible voice she whispered to the wind. "No matter how strong the bonds between us are... my attachment and worry towards Dany is stronger... Yoh I'm sorry... “Letting the small voice be drowned in the sounds of the lashing waves and the howls of the winds.

It snuff out the stifling emotions that were starting to swirl, that is threatening to upturn her calm thoughts. Find it difficult to turn her back on someone crying. Especially towards the first person to grew on her, here on Antar. A small inaudible sigh or resignation escaped her lips. Her plan will undermine her principle in nosing with other people's business as well as her relaxation time. But her relaxation would be in vain, if her friend would keep crying on the other side of the boulder formations. Her action was put on a stop, when she heard Livi mentioned the name Rylen, towards the new presence that arrived.

By now Rianne was already able to tell that Rylen was a very nice and gentle person. Based on the observations she had gathered from her fellow trainee, over the course of their training. Thank Gods! Someone probably more capable of relieving her tears than me has arrived. Rianne sighed in relief as she slumped further in her position instead of standing up. Her small a prayer was answered. Rylen I'll leave her in your care... I hope he could return a smile on that face... She started to lean her head again on the rock, while observing and listening the sea. Knowing there's no way she can't sleep at a time like this, she simply closed her eyes. Focusing on listening to the murmurs of winds, as her left hand subconsciously and silently clawed the sand, digging up some buried shells. Besides I doubt Rylen would make Livi cry even more, but just in the slightest case he does...

Rylen looked up from dropping his letter into the mailbox when he heard a quiet sniffle. Alarmed, Rylen continued to stare at Livi as she turned to greet him back. Her eyes had a shiny gleam, a tell-tale sign that she had been crying, and he didn't need to know her just to see that her smile was a forced one.

"So what brings you here?" He heard her ask, though she was refusing to meet his eyes until she finally looked down to the ground. "I-I just came by to drop off the letter of Lady Camille to her family." She continued, her voice wavering slightly.

Rylen was starting to panic. 'Wha...why is she crying?' He thought to himself, aghast. He really didn't have many experiences with crying ladies. His only sister wasn't really the type to cry...rather, she was the type to make other people cry. And on the rare times she did cry, she goes directly to their parents for comfort.

And he really wasn't a ladies' man so there weren't any ladies who come to him weeping their hearts out. That was Caden's specialty. He was usually hidden in the shadow of his more outgoing older brothers. Not that he was interested in stuff like that. He was too focused on his studies because he didn't want to flunk his subjects and seem ungrateful to the generosity shown to him by the House of Amedea.

In fact, the only time he could ever recall having to comfort a crying girl was roughly nine years ago...

His hand reached up to the scar on his cheek as he remembered the sting of the sharp blade as it sliced his skin. 'Has it been that long...?' He thought absently. He was quite lucky that time actually. It could have been worse. Just a few inches up and he'd have lost his left eye.

Shaking his head, Rylen tried to smile towards Livi. "Oh...an errand for Lady Camille? That's nice of you to do for her." He said, trying to keep the atmosphere light. Maybe he should just pretend not to know she was crying? She doesn't seem the type to cry in front of other people. She'd probably just get embarrassed if he called her out on it.

"As for me, I...um, just wanted to send a letter to my family." He said, reaching a hand behind his neck. He hoped Livi wouldn't realize just how homesick he was from that statement.

Livi sighed with what he said and just let it go. 'He's also dropping a letter to his family, huh?' she thought while getting annoyed. The day seemed to be mocking her as she keeps hearing the word family. The sadness she was feeling was turning into a bitter taste of jealousy. "Everyone is worrying about their families." she muttered. Then she laughed a bit. "Oh, a letter? That's nice. I only have my Uncle Lyall now. Which reminds me I wonder how he is doing right now?" she turned her back to him and gazed faraway. 'You shouldn't think like that. It's been years already.'

Livi continued acting like she was fine. 'At least he didn't ask.' Relieved that she didn't have to explain anything. Pushing the memories to the back of her mind, she focused on what he had said.

Turning back to him, she asked "Are they doing fine?" with a hesitant look on her face. 'They should be fine, right? Since he did just send a letter.' She noticed the scar on his face and thought. 'It's been while since we've known each other but I wonder how he got that scar? I can't help but want to question but it might be related to a bad memory. I guess I'll have to hold back.'

Rylen knew he stepped into a proverbial trap when he heard Livi mutter something indistinguishable under her breath and then laugh a fake sounding laugh. The feeling strengthened when the girl casually mentioned that she only had her 'Uncle Lyall' left. Too casually, as if speaking about the weather.

His heart dropped to his stomach. 'Oh...' He thought to himself, realizing what Livi must have been crying about moments before. And he just rubbed it to her face by telling her that he still had family left to send letters to. 'Did she lose her family to a demon attack too?' Rylen asked himself remorsefully, his mind going to Ileana, who also suffered the same fate. But he couldn't bring himself to ask because it just might make Livi cry.

So instead, he focused on the question she threw at him.

"Well, I hope so..." Rylen answered. "I mean...it's one of the reasons why I am here in the first place, aside from answering the call to defend our land and..er..." He coughed awkwardly, deciding not to continue. It would be awkward to say that he joined the order because he was worried about General Ileana and wanted to help her specifically.

"As I was saying, I wanted to ensure they're safe from the demons." He looked out to the sea, towards the main island visible in the distance. "I was hoping that if I'm here in the Training Order, I'd be able to know quickly if there are demon attacks and take appropriate measures to ensure their safety if needed...and it seems I'm right." Rylen said, thinking about the last news they've heard about Tomichi being attacked and Ileana being sent over to lead the defense.

It made him worry for his friend but he knew that Ileana was strong. He just have to believe she can successfully defeat those demons. 'It's not like she's alone over there...right?' He thought to himself worriedly. Right now, all he can do is train hard until he can finally be strong enough to stand in the battlefield with her.

"Anyway...what about you? You mentioned an 'Uncle Lyall'...haven't you sent him any updates about you since you've been here?" Rylen asked hesitantly, hoping the question wouldn't trigger the girl's tears. "Won't he be happy to hear from you?"

"Yes, I did send uncle a letter[1] a few days back. I wonder if it has reached him or when he can reply? He might be too busy now." she replied casually. "It took me quite some time to send him a letter. I hope he's doing fine. Now I'm beginning to miss him."

From time to time, her thoughts do wander off to how her uncle was doing and what it would have been like if she had not joined the Training Order. However, deep inside she knew that she couldn't take it. Rage would surely consume her along with the feeling of helplessness. She wouldn't be able to take not doing anything. The kingdom had offered a chance for her to get back at the evil demons that massacred not her parents but others as well. If not she would have instead rashly attacked the demons and die trying.

"In a way the Training Order, saved my life and gave me a reason to move forward. For uncle and for everyone dear to me. I will do my best."

'Each one of us has our own reason for fighting these demons. I wonder who else shares my sentiments in fighting the demons? I also do want to make this world a safer place so I won't lose uncle, too.'

Hearing Rylen's purpose for joining the Training Order, she admired and envied him at the same time. Fighting for your family and for a noble cause.

'Rylen is really nice. He's fighting for his family.' she thought and smiled genuinely at him. 'He seemed to have noticed. I'm a bit glad he's not pursuing it. I'm glad it was him who found me here. I wouldn't know what to do if it was someone else. Well, Rianne's okay since she's my dear friend.'

"That's so nice of you, you have such a noble purpose of joining the Training Order. I'm admiring you more and more." she said jocularly. She was beginning to feel a bit awkward with the gloomy atmosphere she started so she had turned back at her cheery self to put Rylen at ease.

Rylen listened quietly as Livi talked. He really couldn't begin to imagine how it feels to lose your loved ones in such an untimely manner. And he hopes he'd never get to find out.

And it's up to his performance in the Training Order to ensure that.

He was also relieved to know that he wasn't the only one missing their family. It made him feel less like a loser who couldn't live without his family.

Sure he knew that it is normal to miss your family...it's just that, at a time like this and surrounded by people who may have lost their families to the demons or another, it didn't seem appropriate to keep thinking about them.

It feels like he'd be rubbing it in their faces. Like what he inadvertently did to Livi earlier.

"That's so nice of you, you have such a noble purpose of joining the Training Order. I'm admiring you more and more." Livi suddenly said, and although she had said it in a teasing manner, Rylen still couldn't help but flush in embarrassment.

He ducked his head down and rubbed the back of his neck self-consciously. "Th-There's really nothing to admire...this was actually a selfish move on my part. My family wasn't really keen on the idea." He admitted. "I came here despite what they wanted. I could have already made their lives better now if only I..." Had he accepted the position the Amedea House has spent years tailoring him to get, they'd be much better off now. But then, it would all be meaningless if the demons destroyed them all.

He shook his head and started again. "In the end they relented. I guess they were just too shocked that I wouldn't back out on this one. I usually just go along with their wishes. But the threat of the demons is far too great to ignore. Maybe they understood it too."

Then Rylen smiled at Livi, "if anything, I think you're the admirable one. Being able to find reason to keep on living...Being able to look up and smile despite everything that has happened..." She must be in pain and yet she could smile that brightly. Livi is truly a strong person. But...

He fidgeted slightly, "y-you know...if you need anyone to talk to...or even just listen...I'll be here." He said while looking down on the ground. He hoped he wasn't overstepping his bounds and yet he couldn't just let Livi bear all that sadness in her heart.

Seeing Rylen being embarrassed made Livi giggle. "I see, it is okay to be selfish once in a while especially if it is for something you really want." she nodded at him. "Even if you say it's selfish, you are doing it also for them which is still quite honorable."

'The fear of losing what you have.' she thought. No one is safe from the demons. They could attack at any given time. Always having to fear about them. No matter how well off you are or how safe your area is, you are just delaying your doom if no one will stop the demons. Livi thought that Rylen's choice was the most practical one. It is even the most dangerous and hard to make decision. Being away from your family, joining the fight where your life is at stake. What could be more terrifying than that?

'If my parents were still alive, would I have joined the Training Order?' she wondered. "It's really not selfish at all Rylen." she said. 'Choosing to stay safe with them is, for me, the selfish choice. A choice that I could have made.' she sighed sadly.

When he said: "y-you know...if you need anyone to talk to...or even just listen...I'll be here."

Livi smiled. 'Sometimes I forget that there are people around me. Uncle Lyall… Rianne… Rylen… and everyone from the Training Order. They are important to me. I hope I am to them as well.' she became teary-eyed again but now with a smile on her face. "Thank you, Rylen." she beamed at him. "I'm glad it's you, who found me here. You know, you are really there when I needed someone. From the first time I met you[1], the library[2], the bath[3] and then now." Then suddenly she realized how nice Rylen had been to her. She felt her heartbeat quicken and became a bit embarrassed. 'Rylen is just nice.' she repeated in her head. 'He's just a special friend.'

"Well I have one request though, could I have a hug?" she said as she stretched out her arms sideways. Instead of moping around, she should just enjoy the company of her friends. "Mom said that hugs make everything better. This is what she would say whenever I feel sad. If you don't, I'll cry loudly." she teased. "I'll give you five seconds. One, two..."

Rylen chuckled as he remembered those times. It felt like it was long ago when they'd only known each other for a month. With training pushed on them everyday, it was getting harder for him to imagine what his life was like when he didn't have any aching body part every time he woke up in the morning.

But he was happy to note that he was slowly getting used to the pain. It takes him a considerable while before his mind protests from the pain. He wondered if it was the same for Livi too. Or the others.

He was about to ask when he heard the girl's sudden request and then the consequent...well, he could only describe it as blackmail. But she was just teasing him...right? "A..hug?" He stared at her briefly. He couldn't be sure with girls...

"Oh...o-of course. If you need it..." He finally answered in an awkward voice, deciding to humor her. "Right." It wasn't really a bad request anyway. He was just...surprised.

If there was one thing he never expected to happen when he decided to apply for the training order, being asked for a hug was definitely it.

He stepped closer to the girl and then hesitantly wrapped his arms around her.

The words carried by the wind were barely audible. Rianne could barely piece together, what Livi and Rylen were talking about. But she was sure of one thing. It was about "family". Probably the main reason why these two fellow trainees of hers, became part of the Training Order. A lump began forming in her throat. Family. The first unit of society we became part of, once we come into this world. One of the forces that drives people's decisions and actions.

It made her smile thinking of grateful it was meeting the two of them together as well as the people she got acquainted in Antar. For meeting them would've nearly been impossible, if she wasn't driven by her own quest for family. But her happy thoughts were doused by the tide rising. A nice size wave, rammed itself on the rocks splashing her once dried body with sea spray. Great... Is this karama for eavesdropping on them...?! she mentally cried. Everything was soaked. Nonetheless she don her coat, pulled over the hood to conceal her face. And she cloaked herself with her over-sized towel over, concealing the coat's tattered state, along with her soaked slip-ons. From afar Rianne could could pass off looking like the crafters of the House of Cruciane. Which isn't quite farfetched. Some of her coats were deviant designs, of the standard crafter's cloak. Well if you can tell the difference in design from afar that is. And if fate had allowed it, she might have actually became a crafter.

The talk between Livi and Rylen, sounded as if it had became private. She'd feel a little guilty somehow for being there, even though she could barely hear what they were saying. And as much as she would love to get closer to them, she can't stop herself from holding back. Unlike them, who can easily share their sentiments, Rianne can't. It was common for her family and relatives to keep a form of distance from the general public. Their privacy was important to them. I don't think they'd be that happy finding me here and listening to them... sort of...

Making sure that her escape route would be inconspicuous to her peers. She decided to leave Livi and Rylen alone, to have their own privacy.
By mere chance during her escape, she caught a glimpse of Rylen and Livi embracing. It made her pause for a bit. Wondering what relationship they had. Is it normal to hug a non-relative?. As far as Rianne's limited understanding of human interaction, which was full of propriety and social decorum. Skinship like this was only done for relatives and someone who one share intimacy with. Not that is common for her to give or receive hugs, other than from her closed circle family. Rianne stood partially hidden among the undergrowth. Like a shadowy ghost guarding the tree line, while peering over the watery horizon.

"…three, four, five." Livi closed her eyes as she counted. She wasn't expecting Rylen to actually agree to her request so she added a little blackmail in her request. She was wondering what kind of excuse he might come up with. Not listening much to his answer, she stood there until he hugged her. Her eyes shot open and thought 'Um, he really did.' She felt a bit embarrassed at her request and at him who actually followed through.

She blushed then hugged him back gently. "Thank you." she whispered "I was actually thinking about them. I'm an only child, you see, so there are only a few people who are truly important to me." she rested her head on his shoulders then said "So I will work hard in my training so I can protect everyone important to me, including you. It's been only a short while but I treasure you guys. I don't want to lose anyone anymore. I am greedy that way." she giggled.

She raised her head then looked at the distance behind Rylen. She tilted her head to the side and looked questionably at the cloaked figure by the undergrowth. However she was not sure where that person was facing since it was quite far from where they were standing. The figure was too far to make out so she ignored it.

Livi suddenly hugged him tightly then let go of him and laughed. "I feel better now." she beamed at him. "Mother was right. Hugs make everything better."

Holding his breath, Rylen half-expected for Livi to laugh and push him away but was proven wrong when the girl leaned into him and returned his hug.

He really wasn't used to it. Hugging. He barely had any friends and his family wasn't the hugging type either. In fact the only time he could clearly remember being hugged by his family was when he was bidding them farewell right before leaving for Antar.

He could feel the heat starting to creep into his face but he fought it back as valiantly as he could. He was already embarrassed enough as it is without having to be caught blushing. Unfortunately, he lost the fight when he heard Livi's words. It honestly touched him, that Livi would include him as one of the people important to her.

He wasn't exactly good at making friends so he was quite...honored? Pleased?

Either way, he suddenly didn't feel so homesick anymore.

Whether it was from the hug or Livi's words, he wasn't sure. Not that it mattered anyway.

He smiled and looked down to hide his face when Livi let go of him, announcing that she felt better.

"I'm glad I could help." Rylen said, reaching a hand to rub the back of his neck self-consciously, willing the blood on his cheeks to subside. When his face didn't feel so hot anymore, he looked up again and noticed that the shadows had shortened quite a bit.

"Well then, the sun is rising higher." He started as he looked at Livi, "I should get started on my training for today...um, what about you? Do you want to come with me?" Rylen asked, feeling that it would be rude to just leave on his own. "To the training hall, I mean." He added.

Seeing Rylen getting embarrassed Livi just chuckled. 'It's been awhile since I have thought nicely of someone.' Even though she had many friends from her hometown, only a few were able to become close to her. And also because of the demon attacks she had lost most of them. Everything she held dear was gone because of the demons. So she reminds herself everyday to work hard and get stronger. For revenge and to protect the remaining people important to her.

The sudden up and downs in her mood is making her head ache. So she kept her focus on the present. She has a new set of friends that are undergoing training to become strong. Each one carrying their own reasons.

It was now almost time for another training session. Their little get together will have to end. She answered "Sure, let's go." grabbing his hand so they can walk together towards the Training Hall.

Rylen was surprised when Livi grabbed his hand, but he nodded and immediately fell into step with her as they walked away from the port to start another session of brutal training.

At least he was getting used to it.

He glanced at the girl walking next to him, wondering if she was too.

He shook his head slightly. The atmosphere between them has already turned pleasant enough. No need to remind her of their harsh training for a few more minutes.

Besides, he can ask about it later.

Livi and Rylen exits.

Rianne was struck by curiosity even more as she saw the two figure holding hands. As far as she could remember, in the short time she had spent with Livi this was the first time she ever saw her actively held hands with a guy. I wonder what relationship this two have?

Shaking her head It can't be that fast, can it? As far as from the stories her Grandfathers told her about their family. They met her Grandmothers while working under the Noble Houses, and the same story goes for her parents. Well anything is possible. I won't be here if Mum and Dad, didn't met and get to know each other while working under my Uncles together...

"I'll watch over you two." Rianne deep in her heart promises to become even stronger in order to protect and save those who have become dear to her. "I pray no demons could tear you guys apart."

People deserve to find happiness... she smiles as she watches on the two retreating figure, whom she could discern were smiling together.

Isn't that why the Order was built? Not only were they tasked to recover lands lost, to fightback and to eliminate demons, but also to defend the people, and to protect their fragile lives. Those people who deserve to live happily and peacefully without worrying of demons attacking their homes. Or those who deserve to finally have peace and happiness returned to them after their encounters with demons.
