Character Profile: Personality:
Enneagram Personality Type 8w7 The 8w7 personality type embodies many of the ways of thinking that people strive to adapt through "assertiveness training." 8w7's speak up quickly when they're discontent, with little concern for the approval of their company. Once they've made their point, or settled the matter, however, their anger dissipates as quickly as it came, and suddenly their minds are somewhere else - getting excited about something, perhaps, or getting angry about something else. Needless to say, the energy level of this personality type is too much for some people, but that doesn't matter much to the 8w7, who, as a type, is in the company of the most independent people. When their willfulness gets out of control, their uninhibited nature, which once gave them a refreshing bravado, turns into ruthlessness and crass insensitivity, allowing them to take advantage of people without any apparent conscience on their part. Some tend to consider 8w7's overly materialistic, but one can hardly argue that their style is that of the true entrepreneur.
If his peers were to describe Volker in a single word, they would probablly say something along the lines of selfish, greedy, deplorable, and infuriating. If Volker were to describe himself, he'd say he was more ambitious, insatiable, eccentric, and charming. That probably says a lot about the kind of person he is.
While Volker is primarily motivated by his own personal agenda, he will go to great lengths to right percieved slights and injustices. For example, he may tease and ridicule his comrades, but if someone else were to try and do the same he would become surprisingly protective of them. A sort of, only I am allowed to do such things type of mentality.
Growing up as a thief and a criminal, as a soldier old habits die hard. Volker still tends to suffer from the occasional case of sticky fingers, but he would remind others that most of the people he steals from can afford the loss. Furthermore, Volker finds violent criminals to be deplorable and is also extremely protective of children, particullarily orphans like himself. He fancies himself to be a ladies' man, although he isn't as successful as he frequently claims.
Finally, Volker is sly and crafty. A well practiced liar, Volker is adept at using manipulative and underhanded methods to get what he wants. Volker is an intelligent, cunning man with an enormous appetite for life. Good food, good drink, and good lovers! Volker loves laughing and quipping in the face of opposition and authority with a quick and witty remark always at the ready.
His mouth has gotten himself into trouble almost as many times as it has gotten him out of it.
He's also something of a masochist...
Fashion Sense: Whatever best suits the occasion, but generally he prefers simple, practical clothing that doesn't attract too much attention. Likes: Pretty girls, Money, Sleeping, Alcohol, Food (especially sweets) Dislikes: Nobles, authority, Small Spaces, Fish Favorite Color: Silver Favorite Animal: Alley Cats Hobbies: Napping, Sewing, Singing Strengths: A talented in lies and deception. Nimble and stealthy for a man of his size. A near indomitable will to survive, Strong constitution, Iron Stomach, and a willingness to sacrifice his dignity for greater gain. Weaknesses: Very Claustrophobic, slow to trust, and despite all his posturing is rather insecure. He loves to tease people and push their buttons, which has gotten him punched out on more than one occasion. At times he can be rather prideful, and will let his emotions guide his actions over logic.
Character Backstory: Volker never knew his parents, where he came from, or who he was. One dark night in autumn, he was left in front of the doors of a small convent just outside of Vetanon. A small baby bundled in a fine quilt blanket. Volker was luckily found by one of the nuns before he froze to death, and took him in. The only clue to his heritage, his quilt blanket, was sold off by the cruel mother superior who ran the convent . Volker was brought up along half a dozen other orphans of varying ages, enduring the harsh discipline and strict regimen that came with being a ward of the church. While the Convent received support from taxes and church donations, little of that money actually made it to Volker and the other orphans. The mother superior kept most of the money for herself, secretly spending it on fine food, exotic drink, and other luxuries. Volker got his surname Faust from the Convent, which was known as the Convent of Saint Faustus. While Volker had not parents, one of the younger nuns had grown rather fond of Volker and was extremely protective of him. Volker knew her only as sister Gretchen. She was the only person to show Volker any kindness, and so was the first person Volker ever loved. When he turned 5, sister Gretchen gifted Volker with a small blanket she had made herself, doing her best to recreate the emblem and details that she remembered from Volker’s quilt as a baby. While it was a crude imitation, Volke cherished it as his only possession. In the bottom right corner of the blanket is what looks to be a coat of arms, bearing the mark of what looks to be a grey serpent. Sister Gretchen was also in charge of teaching Volker and the other orphans their daily lessons. Under the church, Volker was able to learn how to read and write. When Volker turned 7 he was kicked out of the orphanage. Considered to be a man in the eyes of the church, he no longer had a place among the sisters of the convent. The mother superior cast him out with little more than the clothes on his back, Volker was left to fend for himself. The first few nights were the hardest. Sleeping in the cold, praying that it didn't rain. After 3 days, Volker stole for the first time. He hadn't eaten since being forced out of the convent, and his hunger grew unbearable. He attempted to steal an apple from produce vendor in Vetanon's town market, but he was too hungry and too weak to make it far. The man selling the fruit quickly caught Volker and gave him a good thrashing, leaving him with the scar he now has on his forehead. Volker was left in an alley, bruised and bloody. The apple he had stolen had been trampled into the muddy ground. Volker still ate it, and to this day Volker claims it was the sweetest thing he had ever tasted. Volker grew smarter, eating out of garbages and begging for scraps. He eventually found paying work down by the docks, hauling cargo on and off of merchant ships. The pay was lousy, and the work was hard, but Volker endured. Fortunately there was the added bonus of Volker being able to steal small items of value as he helped to unload such goods. Since no one knew Volker could read, Volker could easily sneak a peek at shipping manifests and find out which crates were worth breaking into. He wouldn’t take much, only enough to help feed himself, and never enough to warrant any suspicion. By the time he turned 12, Volker had made his way to Triathos, having found work running trade routes with merchant caravans. Volker met many different people, some of which he even liked, but he never stayed in one place for too long, always working, struggling to earn a living. It was among these merchants that Volker developed his talent for lying. Merchants would haggle prices, lie about the quality and value of their goods. The merchants knew which custom guards to bribe and which to avoid. Volker got his first taste of how the real world worked for people like him. When Volker reached the age of 15, he had managed to find a steady job working on a fishing ship based out of Comos. Volker would spend weeks out at sea, only to return to the small shack he called home in Comos. In the off season, when the fish weren’t as plentiful, they would sometimes take on work as smugglers. Life went on like this for the next few years, until a terrible summer storm sunk the fishing ship Volker worked on and killing the captain he worked for. Volker had managed to make it back to shore, floating in with the tide on a piece of driftwood. Upon returning to Comos, Volker broke into the home of his dead boss and took everything of value. Volker used the money he received for selling off his Captain's possessions and used it to make it to Ponomy city. In the beautiful city of Ponomy, Volker found a thriving underground criminal culture. A young man of 18, Volker took whatever work he could find. Volker started working as a low-level enforcer for some street gang he no longer cares to remember, eventually working his way up through the ranks of lower society. Volker did things he wasn’t proud of, but he claims to have done it out of necessity. Volker stole from people, mugged people. Later on he would also be involved in schemes involving blackmail and extortion of nobles. He’d play a part in running street cons and small smuggling operations through Altrus port. Then there was the kidnapping… And Volker had decided that this life was not for him. The years between when Volker arrived in Ponomy to when he joined the training corps are shady at best, and shrouded in secrecy. The only lasting proof of his life of crime is the tattoo of a grim reaper that he has on his right breast. Volker doesn’t like to talk about this part of his life, claiming that it brings him no small amount of shame and regret. Until the Demon Gate appeared, Volker hadn't paid much attention to the world around him, but with the chaos of war came opportunity. The training order provided Volker with the chance to finally make something of himself, and to be legitimate. If he became a career soldier, he wouldn't have to worry about working terrible jobs and starving during the winter. Volker applied for the training order, claiming that he wanted to do his civic duty and protect the land. In truth, however, Volker only wants to earn riches and fame. It wasn’t easy leaving behind a life of crime. Thankfully, most of his peers think that he was just a common thug, nothing too sinister. If only they knew some of the things Volker had done. Volker is still haunted by ghosts of his past, some that are all too real.
Relationships: Unknown - Father Unknown - Mother Unknown - Siblings or Relatives
Abilities and Power: Weapon: Rapier (Wind Element)
Skills:
Squall - A sudden violent gust of wind is called forth, sweeping away all that stands in it's path. Enemies within range of 25 yards are pushed back and damaged by the cutting winds.
Zephyr - Soft, gentle breeze is summoned that helps to improve the caster's range of movement. The caster becomes extremely light of foot, faster, and almost weightless which allows them to leap to great heights or glide safely down to earth from up high.
Mistral - A cold, dry wind is summoned that slows a target and also reduces the effect of any fire or water elemental magic within the same target area.
Sample Script: At long last, the port of Antar came into view. Volker Faust leaned over the edge of the ship to get a good look. The island of Antar was quite large, he couldn't even make out the training ground from here. Volker wondered how far it was from the port, he wouldn't mind a bit of a walk after being cooped up on a ship with a bunch of brats. Volker turned around, observing his fellow recruits. Volker stood a good head taller than most of them, his face considerably more defined.
"Does the King really send children to fight his wars for him?" Volker scoffed, "Altrus is worse off than I thought."
It didn't take long for the ship to dock, and soon Volker and his fellow trainees were taking their first steps onto Antar. They all crowded onto the dock, seemingly unsure of where to go next. Thankfully, Volker could see over the heads of most of them and spotted three women up ahead waiting to greet them.
The crowd of trainees began to murmur and whisper to one another, speculating as to the identities of the women. Volker could guess as to who they were. Their fancy uniforms screamed nobility, and they carried themselves with an air of authority and self-importance. The Generals no doubt, Volker disliked them already.
