Setting:

This is a reply thread for Side Quest: Ghosts Within Grounds | SQ002
The timeline setting for this thread is the night after the first training, Weapon of Choice

Sleepiness drove Kiran’s mouth to open up wide into a yawn as he tries to drag his feet, walking towards his dormitory door, ignoring the darkness of the room. He is already used to darkness since with how their family grown up to be poor, they can’t even afford to buy a light that could suffice for a week. So they usually use candles three times a week, making him drawn to the dark more than the light. And Tylon’s dumps are not that lively either so it just suited his taste even.

Feeling the need to pee below him, he opened his knob to get out of his own room with only his memory as his map to follow. He did took the time to roam around the halls and found that his room is just right at the front of the toilet – which makes his current mission less of a hassle.

When he stepped out of his room, he didn’t realize he was not the only one who got out of their own room to go to somewhere before the clock strikes 23:00.

Kiran almost leaped out of his clothes when he heard a strong voice of a woman not from a far. But thanks to the dim lights of nature, he could overwrite his fear of women mentally by making up excuses inside his head.

“I’m sorry!” He exclaimed immediately after realizing whose voice it was. And knowing that General Eclair Equiste’s image is already imprinted in his mind, he quickly went behind Locke, shielding himself from his fears like a little pup that lost his way and charged by a lion.

Locke's body stiffened the moment the recruit he was following turned back and ran behind him. In front of his face was a rapier's tip, too close to call for comfort. In an act of instinct, his hands were raised in the air as his eyes finally realized it was one of the generals. They were mere recruits. He wasn't sure about it but Locke sensed that they were not allowed to run around at this time, especially in the dark.

"Good evening, general Equiste," Locke spoke out in a sheepish manner, not knowing how to respond except to speak his truth. "Or should I say morning? I know not what time it is now but will you please lower your weapon? We were chasing after a sound, might you have heard of it as well?"

Hearing the familiarity of the voice, Eclair slowly lowered her weapon and heaved a low sigh of relief.

“Locke Cole?” Eclair asked despite being sure. “What?” After a while, clouds cleared above them that gave her better lighting of the whole situation, exposing a hiding Kiran behind Locke’s body and a fearful Dianne. “Dianne. What are these two doing here?” She asked.

Now that she registered each of their faces, she relaxed her whole muscles.

“As far as I know, these two kids are behind schedule. Aren’t you guys tired?” She asked, looking over Kiran and then to Locke who happen to be looking more calm than he should be.

Dianne gasped in shock as General Equiste appeared before her eyes. Oh no.

"General Equiste!" Dianne immediately hurried forward and snapped to attention. Even though she wasn't a soldier anymore, old habits die hard. "I have heard a suspicious noise earlier on and I was going to investigate it. These two also heard it and decided to tag along, being the gentlemen they are." Dianne reported, hoping to save the trainees from the woman's wrath. This was her fault for faltering in the first place. She knew she should have just forced them back into their rooms.

Why oh why? Of all the people to appear, it just had to be General Equiste.

This was just not her night, it seems.

Out of all the people that Kiran has to meet at this time of the day and in such a situation, it has to be one of the Generals and… a woman.

Apparently, being in the spotlight was never his plan. Good thing that Locke is being with him. At least, he has a physical shield and a man who can out-mouth a General with reasoning. With that, Kiran can only continue being under the shadows, trying to conceal his presence as much as he can behind Locke.

He also threw a pleading eye towards the woman behind them and it made everything worse for him, making him cling on Locke like a kid who is about to get hit by his mother in one side and by his father on the other side.

“You guys…” Edward could only say when he realized that there are other people around in the middle of the night other than him and Eclair. He did make sure to choose a time when everyone is already fallen fast asleep to make it so that no one could interrupt their spar-after-a-long-time.

“Noise?” He echoed after hearing Dianne’s excuse. Then he burst out laughing. “Haha! Oh, did you mean when someone stumbled over rocks and hit the water dormitory’s water tank?” He eyed on his little sister who is just in front of him. He guessed that she was hiding her face when he just bolted out something embarrassing during their latest fight.

Not waiting for Eclair to react, Edward just shrugged the topic off. “Well, there is this weird sound too when someone fell from trying to be a ninja a little while ago.” He added another remark while he chuckled to himself.

Damn. This is too fun.

Eclair swore that she just heard a nerve snapped within her at words the person behind her. She couldn’t help but show a sour smile on her face with all her willpower fighting to stop herself from unsheathing the rapier hung on her hips and pierce a blow through Edward’s skull at this very moment.

She inhaled deeply and exhaled to let go of the matter this time. It would be even more stressful on her part to be eaten up by one of Edward’s way of making her show rare expressions. It has always been his goal every day that most of the time, she would end up ignoring him.

Instead of thinking how she would give Edward a piece of her mind, Eclair gave out a grin at the three people in front of her. “I’m sorry. I’m afraid, I need to talk some sense into your Advisor over here, trainees.” She said while having a hand extend to her left, pertaining at Edward’s direction while her right gripped on her rapier, still thinking twice about the blow that she’s been thinking a while back. “And I do hope that you are all aware that you are out of the dorms very late at night now.” She eyed on Dianne who is supposed to be making sure that these trainees follow their house rules.

“Better return to your rooms now.” She added and stepped forward, passing through three figures, and on her way back to her own room for some shower and rest. After all the feel of sweat and dirt into her skin makes her uncomfortable ten more times in the evening.

“And oh,” She stopped on her tracks and turned to the people behind her. “Reflection papers for you two. Pass them first thing in the morning at my office.” She widely smiled at them then glared at Edward’s direction the next second. “And as for you, Edward Equiste, get to your room this instant.” Her cold voice rang, emphasizing her big brother’s name.

Eclair exits.

'So the noise was made by them?' Dianne mused. 'But why would they pick the dormitory as the best place to spar at this hour?' She thought with a bit of irritation while schooling her face to remain as passive as ever.

Dianne bowed at the two nobles before her as formally as she could when General Equiste remarked about the trainees being out after hours. "I am sorry my lady. It will not happen again." She intoned before turning to look at the two men when the Lady-General went on her way. "Now, off to bed, the two of you." She ordered, "though I suggest writing up those reflection papers first or you might forget them in the morning." She added.

The general won't be very happy if they failed to follow her orders after all.

Meanwhile, she should continue with her nightly rounds before retiring for the night. "You two better be back inside before I finish my patrol or else I will really lock you out for the night." Dianne threatened.

And with another bow and a small 'goodnight' to the older Equiste, Dianne went about her way until she disappeared in the next corner.

Dianne exits.

Kiran’s skin shrieked in fear when he heard the General Equiste mentioned about reflection paper. He wanted to punch himself so hard for doing this kind of thing. Although breaking the rules never crossed his mind but now that it was mentioned, he only remembered that he only not break rules, he was also caught by a General and an Advisor to boot it up.

He held his head with both arms, trying to crack it, telling himself of how of a fool he was and was only using his body, not mind, in doing things. Aren’t I supposed to be doing this training seriously?! He scolded himself.

“This is bad… a reflection paper…. By the sound of it, it is such a scary thing for being called a paper. He stopped for a moment and blinked for a few times after they were told by the woman about writing it before going to bed.

“W-wait… you write reflection papers?” He asked his co-trainee in front of him. “But… how? Is it like a letter or something?” He asked, in full honesty, that this is his first time writing something else aside from filling out his personal data and writing amateur letters his whole life.

The general's words felt heavy to Locke's ears, tired as they were as well. It seemed unreasonable that they would get punishment considering part of the reason for the trouble was the general as well. Locke wanted so much to rebuke but it was not a fight he had to engage in. A good merchant knows when an opportunity has passed, and Locke fully understood that if he engaged any further, all he would get would be losses.

"Understood," he spoke tiredly.

The shocked words of his fellow recruit, while it amused him, made Locke worry a bit. "They're called papers for a reason, you know? Because they're written on paper."

With a tired sigh, he turned his back and spoke to the recruit, "It would be better if this matter would be addressed after we get a good night's rest, aye?"

“Well, good luck on the paper there.” Edward said after quite some time. It would be best to retire for today after that dreadful exchange with the War Goddess, after all. “Although it would have been nice if she was a little harsher.” He whispered to himself, thinking how it would be to see Eclair rage in irritation. Well, with how her work and the pressure cornering her every day, it would explain why she would rather conserve energy.

He sighed as his thoughts went to being worried again. He couldn’t really help it. For her to bear the burden so heavy and still look okay is making him worry even more of her.

“Good night, young lads.” Edward called onto them, shaking away his worrisome thoughts.

The last thing he needs to do is worry about his little sister. He, himself, has a lot more things to do anyway.

With a wave of a hand to the two trainees, he took his leave, getting his feet through the door and into the dormitory, he went.

Edward exits.

“I guess you’re right.” Kiran replied to Locke as he offered to have an early rest for the day. “And I have to think of a way on how to make such a paper.” He told himself with a little lower voice, close to a whisper.

His head switched to the Advisor when he spoke of luck. I don’t think luck can help me when I don’t even know how to compose one. He countered in his head bitterly, trying his best not to curse his family’s standing in society. Education was something he couldn’t feed himself with and he would rather throw the chance to his little sister rather than being showered with blessings.

But it’s too late to regret and blame everything now. All he could do is deal with his problem in the library. At least, it was something his mother has left him. She taught him how to read books in which he used as his sources for learning a lot of stuff. For knowing about the Order.

“Well, then, this chilly night is getting into me like crazy now.” He said as he strokes his arms with both limbs trying to ease the chill with his own body warmth. “Time to hit the sack.”

Kiran exits.
