This is a reply thread for Side Quest: Ghosts Within Grounds | SQ002
The timeline setting for this thread is the night after the first training, Weapon of Choice

Sleepiness drove Kiran’s mouth to open up wide into a yawn as he tries to drag his feet, walking towards his dormitory door, ignoring the darkness of the room. He is already used to darkness since with how their family grown up to be poor, they can’t even afford to buy a light that could suffice for a week. So they usually use candles three times a week, making him drawn to the dark more than the light. And Tylon’s dumps are not that lively either so it just suited his taste even.

Feeling the need to pee below him, he opened his knob to get out of his own room with only his memory as his map to follow. He did took the time to roam around the halls and found that his room is just right at the front of the toilet – which makes his current mission less of a hassle.

When he stepped out of his room, he didn’t realize he was not the only one who got out of their own room to go to somewhere before the clock strikes 23:00.

There was a distant dream. In that dream, there was a red headed maiden frolicking about like any town lass. Behind her was a grey-white haired man with a satisfied look on his face. They were going about towards an open plain that faded to white and ultimately to black. Stretching out his hand, Locke tried to grab the the two's visage as he felt his body being cold. Around him, it started to snow. Just like the snow that fell down during that time he lost his companion.

It was cold, unbearably cold, and coupled with it was cold sweat at the nothingness in his view. Darkness covered everything far and wide. Had he lost everything? Or did he just lose sight of one important thing? These thoughts raced wildly through out him as the blizzard came back with one fell swoop and...

Locke opened his eyes to see the dead of night, silent and lonesome without the other bed that cradled a mumbling red head by his side. It was by far not the first time he woke up in the middle of the night, nor was it the first time he had another bad dream. It had been a common occurrence, enough for him to know to just get back to sleep although this time was different.

Groggily getting up the bed with a stretch, he tried grabbing a candle but forgone the idea as he just straight up headed out of his dorm, which by now he was fairly familiar with, and into the hallway. Passing through, he noticed he was not the only one who got up at this untimely hour. He unconsciously smiled, the merchant's demeanour already kicking in despite knowing it might be unnecessary.

"Tis a cold night, aye?" he softly spoke to the shadowy figure.

Kiran’s eyes lifted at the sound of another voice. Studying the person’s physique, he remembered him during the day when they were trying to select their weapons. Although it clicked him that he hasn’t asked for his name.

“Yeah.” Kiran answered to him. “Oh, by the way, the name is Kiran. You… are?” He asked, trying to give a prying eye to his companion in the dark hallway. “Also taking a pee?”

In normal circumstances, that kind of question might have been to embarrassing but for Kiran, it didn’t matter one bit.

"Ah, the name is Locke Cole and aye, 'tis a rather chilly night and it would seem like nature has started to call my attention," Locke replied without holding back his words. In a normal scenario, he would have phrased it in a less embarrassing manner but as he just woke up, his mind was not as sharp as he wanted it to be.

It was still dark and his eyesight had only started to adjust but he was able to make out the figure as one of his fellow recruits he saw on the first day of training. It would be odd not to be since this was the dormitory after all. But he was not familiar with his name as well.

"Would you be the same, mister...?" he trailed off, not knowing what to address him.

“Well…” Kiran scratched his back as he tried to focus his sight on Locke. “Call of nature, indeed.” He said embarrassingly and laughing out a little.

“By the way, how was your wea—” Kiran’s sentence halted when he heard a loud bang from the outside. His head immediately turned around to the source of the direction and could only imagine what happened. Knowing that such a noise, waking up in almost in the middle of the night is not normal. Not in Antar, as far as he could imagine.

Forgetting his companion, his foot moved towards the toilet and hurriedly did his thing before getting out, banging the door open wide. “I’m gonna check this one out.” He told Locke and dashed to the stairs and downwards.

Locke flinched for a moment, getting caught off guard with the sudden noise. If his mind was in its normal sharpness, he would've likely stopped the recruit who had ran towards the sound. Darkness draws in uncertain danger lurking in the shadows, whether it be mere thieves or monsters. It would be far smarter to wait things out for a while and think about the current situation without jumping forward. That would be what his companion would do, sadly he was alone and sleepy. His mind was still sluggish and so he followed suit and blindly ran with the fellow recruit.

"It might be a thief," he whispered, enough for the other recruit to hear, as he ran downstairs. "Be careful."

Kiran felt his co-trainee trailed after him. Despite the noise screaming danger inside his head, he let the guy do whatever he wants to do, also taking note of Locke’s words.

With haste, he ran through the stairs and slammed the door open as soon as his fingers reached for the knob. He was welcomes by the sudden gust of wind but that didn’t make him falters in his steps. He recalled the direction of the sound, looking left and right and at the same time, trying to search in his head, tracing the way the sound came from. As soon as she figured, she turned left and dashed out, reaching the pavements full of weeds.

With only the moonlight that guides his steps and eyes, it was not clear. But it was clear enough for Kiran to see a figure of a woman up ahead of him. Gulping for air, he hesitated on stepping in front.

What would someone do around here at this time of the night? He asked himself, trying not to laugh on his actions of how he is out here himself. He shook his head after some time and strode forward.

“What’s going on?” He asked as he neared and the woman’s face became solid in his field of vision. Somehow, she was feeling anxious for some reason. “Were you the one who made the noise just now?” He asked, pushing himself and stopped at about three meters apart.

The chill of the nightly wind caressed Locke's neck. His consciousness was slowly waking up as he felt the touch of the icy air on his cheeks. As his actions slowly registered in his head, his instincts told him to slow down, if not to stop. A merchant's ability to protect himself is great and his merchant's teachings told him to value his own safety. But he was not a merchant right now. He was a recruit following a fellow recruit through the darkness of the night, slowly having his eyes adjust to the dimness of it all. For a moment, his thoughts slowly went back to the tales of his companion. That of fae and folklore. The aboriginal spirits that walked the earth on at ungodly hours such as this. It was not unlike the purgatory the church preached about, the souls of the damned would walk the earth at the deadest of night.

Locke shook his head before cold sweat could discomfort him. It was at that moment that his fellow recruit, whom he still knew not what to call, stopped for a short moment to speak. It was not directed to him, though, but rather to a rather vague figure near his sights.

They say demons, like wolves, love to hide in sheep's clothing. Echoed Locke's mind. The words of his companion came to him as his heartbeat started to beat more rapidly. It was not an odd thing for a woman to be wandering about, but at night? And what's more, is this place not a training facility of sorts? These questions raced through his head as he spoke out to the ghastly figure, "What business do you have here in this dead of night?"

Dianne's fear spiked and her head snapped to the direction where the voice came from, shifting into a defensive stance. But as she saw two of the trainees instead, she relaxed slightly. She stepped closer to them to be able to see them more clearly.

"What business do I have?" She snapped testily, hating to be caught off guard, "I should be asking you that question. What are you doing out past curfew?"

Then she turned to the first trainee who spoke up. "And no, it wasn't me. I was trying to ascertain where that sound came from before you appeared." She explained simply.

She rubbed her hands together as the chill of the night and the foreboding feeling that was caused by the unknown sound got to her. "Go back to your rooms. Whatever made that sound might turn out to be someone or something dangerous and I don't want you to get caught in it."

Something dangerous was the thought that Kiran only registered after hearing the woman. Of course, it could be, right? In the middle of night for such a noise to be born, it could nothing be but something weird, right? But, of course, obeying the dormitory rules is also a part of their training.

But guess what? Kiran was overpowered by curiosity that he didn’t mind the other things said to him except for something dangerous.

“That could be true. But I’m more interested into knowing that weird noise than nothing.” He said as he started stepping forward, to check what’s ahead, ignoring the lady that was just there.

Thanks to the power of the night, his consciousness towards women are not surfacing as of the moment since seeing less features of a woman in a form makes it easier for him. Unless she talks. So he made his steps faster, causing him to go beyond what the woman’s light could cover.

The sparse light of whatever shone in the sky slowly illuminated Locke's eyes as he saw the dorm head's vague image. Her voice rang out in a rather alarmed manner which took Locke by surprise. His tensed muscles, tired from the quick sprint and rapid outburst of energy, eased up as he made a subtle sigh.

It was not of relief, though. While the lady that confronted him might not be a hostile thief or a bandit, the noise did exist and the dorm head herself heard it and was going to investigate it. Surely, a man like him would dare not to have a woman in harm's way. It was his pride that was talking and if his companion ever heard of him running away at such display, surely she would not dare look at him with respect.

For a quick moment, Locke glanced at the other recruit he had chased after. His words and action showed that he was not going to back down to the challenge, and as much as his instinct called out for him to stop, he was going to echo the recruit's intention.

"Well," he spoke out to the lady whom had fervently told them to go back. "Since we're all here, tis not a bad idea to lend a hand, aye? They say demons scour the night. Going in alone would be a bit foolish, would you say?"

Under the dark night sky, Locke's words rang clear as his, rather unnecessary, merchant's smile was already at play.

"Hey! Wait one moment young man!" Dianne called out to Kiran but quickly turned to look at Locke as he started to speak.

"D-demons?" She echoed before frowning, "do not be absurd. There are no demons here in Antar." Dianne said firmly, for the trainee or for her peace of mind, that she didn't know.

She remembered the Great War like it was only yesterday, the demons coming in waves, killing and eating everyone in their path. Merciless. Powerful. Deadly.

She couldn't help the shudder that traveled up her spine. She feared them so and that was why she retired from the force. And now there might be one roaming in Antar? No! That cannot be!

But if the generals had captured a demon...could it be possible? But no. The generals would do no such thing? Right? They wouldn't dare bring a live demon here in Antar right?

Dianne bit her lip worriedly, as she looked around. Her eyes lingering in the darkest areas as though expecting a demon to suddenly jump out. It really wasn't that unbelievable...for the generals to bring a live demon here, especially since they work with those weird houses, the Fredeliz and the Cruciane.

"Fine...y-you may help me investigate that sound." Dianne whispered. "But if this turns out to be just a wild goose-chase, don't you dare tell the generals about this. They are very strict with rules and if they found out about this..." She trailed off, not wanting to think about the consequences right now.

The darkness mildly hid the fear that shrouded the dorm master's words. If he had not known better, Locke would have not noticed it at all. It was true, though, that he was rather jumping to consequences. The possibility of anything is still up in the air. Be it a thief or a mere squirrel.

"You have my word, milady," Locke said to the lady dorm master as he started to follow his fellow recruit.

With a quick movement, he felt for his waist only to not find his dagger. In his apparent haste, he had just left his only means of self defense. His speed might not be the worst but running away would seem rather unsightly. A merchant he might be but he still had the grandeur imagery of a gallant knight.

Tis really not a good idea... he thought to himself but it was far too late to back out now. All he could do was simply follow the lead of the fellow recruit who was eager to move forward.

"Do you have a plan, just in case things become awry?" he asked to the eager youth.

Kiran’s eyes trailed back to the woman as she tries to battle her decisions to herself. Locke is right since there are a lot of possibilities in a place where monsters once danced through its streets like they owned it. Then Antar is no different. Even if it is an island isolated from the main land.

These possibilities only made Kiran recall of the soldiers that passed over Tylon to get into Kyros Bridge. Whenever they went to the Eastern part their eyes were full of life and great anticipation. But when they returned to the Western, they would be full of dread and their numbers almost cut in half. It was unsightly. It was like most of them saw death and is dead themselves. And he can’t help but see a glint of that view through the woman’s eyes.

Of course, she was also one of them… He thought.

His eyes switched to Locke when he saw the trainee getting near him, asking about his plan. Plan? He echoed. “Do we need a plan when finding out something?” He asked in return. But without waiting for his co-trainee’s answer, he turned back to his goal.

“We just need to barge in and scare the hell out of them, right? Come on.” He said as he waved a hand from the back to guide his other two companies.

Hearing the words of his fellow recruit, Locke could only heave a sigh. It was chilly enough with the night's wind, but the rapid exhale made him a tad more colder. Running off without a second thought was not a common occurrence to him. Instead, he was the kind of guy who would agonize over a problem for hours on end. This was, without much to say, a rather unconventional action.

But despite how dangerous their current 'plan' seemed to be, Locke had no means to refute it. He was not sure whether it really was something he should be wary of or if it had just been the wind. The only way to know would be to find out, but a little precaution would never hurt.

"Well, if that's your plan," he replied as he hurried behind the fellow recruit.

“Damn.” Edward wipes his sweat that’s been travelling from his forehead to his temples and down to his chin with the back of his palm. “Never thought you could do that move now.” He added as he angled his head so he could look above, meeting the eyes of his opponent.

He was on the ground, half laid and half getting up with his rapier on his right hand with his elbow assisting his torso to get up from the grassy surface. He received some scratches all over his body and received a lethal blow on the sides of his stomach making small rips of his light clothing of a sleeveless brown shirt. He mentally thanked himself for he decided to wear his darker pants for the occasion, seeing how some mud has started to discolor his wear.

Panting, he quickly thought of his own situation. If he continues to fall into the ground this much, he would lose this tiny spar. Not that he wanted to win but he doesn’t feel like loosing either. With sudden burst of energy inside of him, he quickly folded both of his legs and forcefully erected his body upward.

“But don’t underestimate me.” With that said, he took a step sideways and thrust his rapier through air, aiming to reach his opponent’s sides, also trying to deal the same damage.

Eclair’s eyes widened as Edward’s figured zoomed into her vision which caused her to kick herself backwards for a few steps to try to avoid the surging rapier. But she failed to save her dark yellow short-sleeved shirt causing it to produce a noise of being ripped at the process. It was too dark to actually see it but she felt chills came into her upper body after that last hit.

Of course, she couldn’t underestimate her older brother’s skills. No matter if Edward was sickly, if he is healthy, he is impossible to bring down into the floor. But then thing is, she was also trained with the same strictness as him when he was a child. And that fueled her pride into more levels than none.

With a swift hand, she also moved her rapier vertically, making both long metals clank at each other, as she tries to seal Edward from attacking her any further, making her put more force on her own weapon. As she sees another opening, her feet moved from left forward and turning her upper body around while extending her right foot away from her, aiming to land a foot on Edward’s right cheek.

Edward has always known that Eclair is in a higher level than him when it comes to speed for his speed had gone down tremendously because of being in bed at most times or doing nothing to keep it up due to being sent to and back from check-ups. But he did his best to maintain his vitality, at the least. So these surprise attacks are nonetheless possible coming from his little sister.

Reflex won over his body and his left arm moved to block the feet from reaching his head. And as pride drove his body, he turned around as well, imitating Eclair's move but this time, trying to get her right side with his right foot, releasing his weapon from the woman’s grasp in the process and pushing her leg away from him.

Dianne silently followed the two recruits for a few minutes, regretting her decision to let them wander out with each second pass. The dark-haired boy seems to only be going around randomly, with no direction in mind.

They were now at the back area of the building and so far, there had been no sign of life, apart from the three of them. Even wildlife creatures are out of sight.

What would she do if it really turned out to be a demon? She shivered slightly as she remembered those horrid creatures. They would forever haunt her nightmares no matter how far she distanced herself from them.

Focusing on the two young men she was following, she searched their person for any sign of weapon with her eyes. Upon finding none apparent, she sighed. This was a foolish errand to let the trainees do. Even if there was a chance that the culprit for that unnatural sound was just a mere wind, there was also a chance that it might be something more hostile.

"I think we've searched enough." Dianne finally said, halting her steps. "I shouldn't have let you two come out with me. What would we do anyway if it turned out to be something dangerous. Do you even have weapons on you?" She asked. And even if they did, their training has just barely started. She'd end up having liabilities instead of assets with them around.

Eclair's balance disrupted at the sudden throw of her feet, making her took a few steps on her left side. And the moment after she had struggled with her feet, she was facing a good knee, hitting her lower right abdomen, making her gaped for air as her body was lifted from the ground and blasted backwards.

“Ugh…” She felt pain rang in her belly as she rolled over the grassy lawn, away from her original position. She coughed some saliva out of her system while she feels her stomach with her left hand and used the rapier in her right to assist herself up.

’Now that was lame.’ She kid to herself. It has been a while since she and Edward had a little friendly spar for they were both purely busy preparing for the Training Order and Edward is mostly running errands, helping the research projects he’s been dealing with. But she didn’t think that her older brother was still in good shape after all of that. He’s been away too long from fighting that she almost underestimated his skill, imagining them being rusty.

Looking at herself with the help of the moonlight just right above, close to being in its perfect shape, she laughed internally. ’Maybe I’m getting too weak too for staying inside the office all day with stacks of papers.’

She was in the middle of assessing damage into her own body when some figures shown into her field of vision. As reflex, she immediately turned her rapier at the direction of the silhouettes and a source of light, ready to go straight in case they don’t respond within ten seconds.

It has been her rule that when something unknown sends no response to her call within those ten seconds, she has no choice but to treat the intruders as demons. After all, they don’t respond, they kill.
