Setting:

Location: Dormitory
NPC In-Charge: Dianne Stella
Side Quest: Ghost Within Grounds
Time: After the events of Antar Public Bathhouse - A Steamy Gathering

Blackness.

That was the only thing Rylen could see beyond the window in his designated room.

Upon checking the time, he found that it was already 23:00. 'No wonder it's so dark...it's an hour to midnight...' Rylen mused as he kept staring into the darkness. He knew he should be heading off to sleep now because they had to be early for tomorrow's training, and yet he was wide awake.

It wasn't like his bed was uncomfortable or that his room was unwelcoming, it was quite the opposite in fact. This was the best room he's ever been lucky enough to sleep in. Back in his home, he had to share a room with his older brothers with beds fluffed up with straws in an attempt to soften them up even just a bit. Needless to say, this room was definitely a huge step up to the room he was used to. The bed was soft and the room was sufficiently furnished with other useful furniture like a desk, a couple of chairs and a wardrobe. It never ceases to amaze him just how the Training Order takes care of their people.

But then again, with their enemies as dangerous as they are, the nobles just might be overcompensating them. They could end up dead as soon as they step out into the battlefield after all...

Rylen sighed, tore his gaze away from the window, blew off his candle and then slumped back into his bed. He really should stop thinking such gloomy things or else he runs the risks of tempting fate to actually make his thoughts come true. He honestly doesn't want to die young. He just wanted to help Ileana in any way he could, as well as provide his family with some means of protection. Being nothing more than peasants, it was quite hard for them to get reliable news in Gadik. They might never know that a demon is already upon them and it will be too late. But if he was a soldier, he could get information right at the source and be able to act quickly.

He was about to drift off to sleep when a muffled bang startled him into alertness. He sat up quickly and looked around. The sound seemed to have come from the first floor...

'What was that? An animal?' Rylen thought, but then it was far too loud to be caused by a rat. "A thief?" He whispered in alarm. He remembered that the thief he had chased earlier this evening had escaped[1]. 'He might have come here to look for something else to steal!'

With that thought, Rylen grabbed the matches and lit his candle again. He took the brass candle-holder and walked towards the door. He slowly opened it and cringed when it squeaked loudly into the darkness of the hallway outside his room. He held out his candle to illuminate the area. 'Damn, I never realized how creepy this place looks when all the lights are out...' He thought while looking out of his door into the hallway left and right. He suddenly remembered all the scary stories his father told him and his siblings to discourage them from wandering off in the night. 'Argh! Why did I have to remember them right now?' He thought in frustration, although the hairs on his arms had started to stand up in response.

'I wonder if anyone else heard that...?' He remembered that they actually weren't allowed to wander past this hour. But he was worried that there was a thief about. 'Hm....what to do...'

Lucifer just got back from helping Loki with Kisara. He was lucky that the dorms are still open or he would have to crash at Loki's room. Kisara can really sleep through anything after they did that trick on her. He thought as he remembers the times he and his older twin did that to her when they were children.

After putting Kisara to bed, he and Loki did a short sparring session before he went back to the dorms. They did to drive out their frustrations. He was still wearing his bracers as he climb up the steps. That's odd. He looked around the and everything was dark, he was used to the darkness because of the minds so he can easily maneuver himself in the dark but still it's a hard feat since he didn't explore the whole building to be familiar with it.

He went to the right wing of the building where the men resides. He know his room is down the hall. Lucifer was about to take a sharp turn then stopped when he heard a loud squeak from a door opening. He thought that it maybe one of the trainees, But who will be awake at this hour.

Lucifer's rebellious and mischievous streak is slowly reaching up the surface as he smirked. A little scare won't hurt anyone. He saw a small light illuminating the hall. On three. One, two.....three!

He jumped to where the light is illuminating, with a loud thud, Showing a toothy grin at the poor soul and said. "Boo!"

"Gaahh!!!" Rylen let out a startled shout and took a couple of steps back into his room, hitting the door causing it to squeak again in protest. He accidentally let go of his candle-holder which fell to the floor with a loud clang. Immediately, darkness flooded his vision as his only source of light disappeared. He sucked in a large breath as he tried to calm his racing heart and focused on the person who suddenly jumped in front of him. Unfortunately, it was much too dark now. But before the light went out, he was sure he had seen red-hair, a blinding smile and large muscled arms.

Then it hit him. He belatedly realized that it was just his neighbor all along.

"What's the big idea!?" Rylen hissed towards the bulky silhouette in front of him. He hoped he had not disturbed anyone with that ruckus he made. He stooped down and felt for his candle-holder on the floor. When he found it, he immediately went to find the matches he left on the bedside table. Once he found them, he quickly lit the candle again and looked back to his doorway with a glare. "How can I help you, sir?" He asked, miffed, as he walked back towards his door.

"Do you need anything?" He so badly wanted to slam the door on his fellow trainee's face. Unfortunately, doing such a thing is against his morals so he opted to glare at the older man instead. Then he realized something, "wait...were you the one who made that noise earlier?"

If it was Lucifer all along then there was no thief and he won't have to leave the comfort of his room. He silently hoped it was the case.

Lucifer felt bad on what he did but he just couldn't resists. Since the intense and awkward atmosphere from the public baths, they need to losen up a little. "Sorry kid, couldn't resist. Names Lucifer by the way. We haven't been introduce properly."

He observe the kid from head to toe. He evaluated that the kid is a hard working and must have worked as a farmer, hence the tanned skin and sun bleached highlights on his hair. This kid looks pretty interesting. He may not look like a much of fighter but seeing that he applied to be a trainee maybe he has an agenda or goal to reach.

While I need to find my purpose here. Other than being father's heir when Loki denied his right. His thought showed a grim look in his face. But his train of thought was broken when the tanned trainee ask him if he was the one making noises.

"Noise? What noise?" He asked the guy. "I just got here from my brother's place in Antar. Lucky that I the dorm was still open when I know that it should be close at 23:00 and which it was odd though."

"Ah, yeah. It's okay. My name is Rylen Cotterill." Rylen responded with a nod, finally calming down. He was a bit embarrassed to be seen reacting like a coward but what's done is done. He stepped out of the door again and held out his freshly lighted candle. "I hope I didn't wake anyone up with that noise though..." He said a bit worriedly as he waited for other trainees to come out of their room and complain. When nothing of the sort happened, he let out a relieved sigh.

Then he turned to look at the taller man again. Lucifer reminded Rylen of his oldest brother, Caden, quite a bit. He also loves to pull stunts not unlike what Lucifer pulled just now and he is also good with the ladies...

Rylen dead-panned as he remembered the scene at the mixed bath earlier.

Well, of course there were notable differences. His brother has never encountered a lady like General Alexandria for one. He doubts that his brother could handle anyone like General Alexandria. There was no one quite like General Alexandria. Period. Secondly, his brother isn't as tall or as bulky as Lucifer right here.

Ah, he was getting home-sick thinking about his brother.

He sighed loudly, the air from his mouth making the candle flicker slightly and their shadows danced briefly with the flame's motion.

"Well, if it wasn't you, then I fear there might be a thief running about." Rylen finally decided to share. "I heard quite a loud sound coming from the first floor earlier." Rylen said hurriedly. "Earlier this evening, I encountered a thief but he escaped..." Rylen glanced down the dark hall again, as if expecting to see the thief in question.

"I was going to go down and check right before you, uh...appeared." He shifted his weight from foot to foot, "and now you say that the doors haven't been locked yet even though it's past curfew? Wh-what if Dianne's been attacked?" He whispered in dread. He really hopes it wasn't the case.

Wh-what if Dianne's been attacked?"

Lucifer looked at Rylen as paled a little. He can here the dread in his voice. He sighed and said, Now that you've mentioned it. I didn't saw the dorm head when I entered the building. I was expecting to see her somewhere at the entrance.

He reevaluate the whole situation. Curfew starts at 23:00 and it is expected for the Dianne to be at the entrance to see if there are some trainees who are late for curfew. Then Rylen said that he heard something unusual.

It may be a thief trying to steal something in the dorms. He thought with a frown on his face. The thief maybe brave or stupid for trying to steal something in a military owned building.

"Where did you heard the noise, Rylen?" He asked the tanned trainee. "We might as well investigate it. Let's just hope that your hunch about Dianne been attacked is wrong."

Upon hearing Lucifer's words, Rylen's fear was alleviated. At least now, he didn't have to go out in the dark alone. It would be dangerous to go out alone too, if there really was a thief, so he was glad to have a companion.

"It came from below? I couldn't pin-point the exact location. It may be inside the dorm or outside..." He answered hesitantly. "Ah, just give me a second." Rylen said as he went into his to retrieve his key and then went back again to where Lucifer was standing before locking his door. If there really was a thief, it's best not to leave his belongings unprotected.

When he heard the click of the doorknob's mechanisms, Rylen looked up to Lucifer again. "I hope Dianne is alright too, I didn't really hear a scream or any sound of struggling..." But that didn't really mean anything...if the thief sneaked up on Dianne and immediately silenced her from behind, then she really wouldn't be able to scream...

'Stop it. Dianne is an ex-military officer! She wouldn't be caught off guard by a mere thief.' He thought to himself firmly. Sometimes, he really hated himself for being so anxious.

"...Let's go down then." Rylen said quietly as he walked down the hall with his candle-holder held in front of him. It was really dark and Lucifer did not have any light on him so he had to lead.

While Rylen wasn't scared of the dark per se, he was a bit afraid of what's hiding in it. He blamed his father for he was the one to tell him and his siblings all those scary stories. He was used to the darkness back at his home, but here in Antar, everything is still unfamiliar to him. The dark in this place doesn't feel as welcoming as it did back home. Rather, it was foreboding.

Lucifer nodded at Rylen as they both went down to the first floor investigate. Hoping that noise didn't come from something sinister. If it was a thief, Lucifer is confident that he can take down the guy but if it something otherworldly well that will be different case.

I know demons are otherworldly and vampires too but they're extinct for centuries. He thought as the walked through the halls of the first floor. They are just legends now. Mere fairy tales....It can't be a ghost. Can it?

Lucifer has heard a few ghost stories in about the Mines in Trontell. Spirits of miners who aren't at peace still wanders in the mines. But he doesn't believe in it much if he has seen it first hand.

The he heard a noise from the outside of the building. "What was that?"

'Creepy...' Rylen thought as he listened to their footsteps echoing in the silence of the night, no matter how much he tried to soften his steps, they remained loud in his ears.

They were now on the first floor near the stairs and it was just as dark as upstairs. Rylen slowly moved his light side to side as he illuminated the area. There weren't anything particularly suspicious as far as he could see...

As they walked into the lobby, he heard a sudden noise coming from outside just as he heard Lucifer say, "What was that?"

He turned to look at Lucifer, his eyes wide. "M-maybe it's Dianne?" Rylen said hopefully. It was just a slight noise. Like someone stepping into a twig. Slowly, he went to the window, careful to keep the candle away from the curtain as he took a peek outside. He squinted as only darkness stared back at him. The night was too dark and there were no moon or stars in the sky.

"I don't see anything...it's too dark." Rylen finally said as he looked away from the window back towards his companion. "...Should we go outside?"

"I don't see anything...it's too dark....Should we go outside?"

Lucifer heard Rylen say. It will do little good or harm if they go outside to investigate. He is hoping that is just Dianne doing her rounds but if not well they guy will have to deal a frustrated Lucifer.

Let's just get this over with so I can sleep this off. He thought with a frustrated sigh and looked at Rylen. "We should see what's out there Rye...Err is it okay for me to call you Rye? I have a feeling that we may get know each other for a while during training."

Taken aback by the sudden request, Rylen could only nod. "Uh yeah. I don't mind." He responded simply as he went to the front door. Most of the people who knew him called him by that nickname so it wasn't like he'd have to adjust.

When he got the front door, he reached for the knob and turned it, only to find out that it was already locked. He frowned and turned again. Still locked.

'That's strange...' Rylen thought. 'Lucifer did say the door wasn't locked when he came in...'

"Uh...did you lock the door when you came in?" Rylen asked Lucifer. But he knew that couldn't be possible. To lock the door, Lucifer would need to have the key first. So if it's locked...then maybe Dianne is finally inside? But that noise outside...

"The door's locked." Rylen voiced out. He looked at his companion for his opinion on the matter. "What do we do now?"

Lucifer gave Rylen a toothsie smile. "Well you can call me Luci, since a lot of my closet friends and family members calls me that."

He followede Rylen to the front door. He turned the nob but the door won't budge.

"Uh...did you lock the door when you came in?"

Lucifer frowned at what Rylen said. The doors were really unlocked when he entered the dorms. How else would he enter the building at exact passed curfew time. Somethings not right here and Lucifer's fighting instinct is kicking in.

"Maybe the it locked it's self." Lucifer said with small shrug. "Won't be the first that I've experience. I've seen something like this happened in some old parts in the Alexandria Mansion."

He went around Rylen give him a gentle push to signal him to step aside a little. He grab something from his back pocket. A small black pouch, he rolled it open on the floor and the contents of the pouch is lock picking tools.

He looked at Rylen and explained. "Err... Me and Loki sometimes use this to sneak out of our home in Sabi. Or picked at the locked hidden doors in the Alexandria Mansion."

"What? We were curious. Especially Kisa-chan." He said to Rylen. He grab two tools from the pouch and proceed on picking up the lock. "Can you give me a little light here Rye."

Dianne kept her fast-steady pace and concentrated up ahead, visualizing the whole layout of the dormitory inside her head while thinking up possibilities about the sound she had heard earlier. Her heart was thumping in a speed so familiar. It was as if she was back again in the war, having nothing but blood staining on her clothes while seeing scenery she could never forget her entire life.

With a surge of panic, she reached her right hand for the door knob and realized that it was locked. Her fingers tangled on her pocket, taking out the key and inserted it into place before turning it around to get the door opened.

But instead of finding herself inside the dormitory grounds, she bumped into a tall figure, making her fall back, butt first, to the ground – thankful that she didn’t hit her spine or anything else the matter. But the pain was still there.

“What the…?” She cursed and followed by a groaning pain as she felt it travel from her lower part to her head. “That hurt…” She whispered and sharply raised her head to meet the eyes of whoever tried to get in her way. “You two… Aren’t you trainees?”

Her pupils rolled, getting her focus to turn to the material that is being held by the guy he just bumped into. As she realized what is about to be done, her brows almost crossed each other, creating additional wrinkles on her old skin, as anger replaced her earlier fear giving her weakened legs more energy to stand up, firm.

“What are you doing? At this time of the night?” She addressed to both young lads in front of her.

Rylen stepped aside when he felt Lucifer nudge him away from the door. Curiously, he looked on as the man took a small black pouch from his pocket. But upon seeing the contents, Rylen's eyes widened.

"What are you doing?" He hissed. What if he accidentally broke the knob instead? They'd be in big trouble. But upon hearing Lucifer's explanation, Rylen merely shook his head and rolled his eyes. 'Figures. Rich people really do whatever they want.'

With a resigned sigh, Rylen brought the light closer to Lucifer. It wasn't like they had any other choice if they want to investigate that noise...

He bit his lip and anxiously looked around. It may be just his paranoid self but he felt like he was being watched. Cold sweat broke out of his skin as he listened to Lucifer working on the knob.

When the sound of the door opening reached his ears, he immediately turned to look and almost got a heart attack in his shock. Standing before them was Dianne, looking livid as she seemed to realize what Lucifer was trying to do.

“What are you doing? At this time of the night?” The woman had asked.

Snapping out of his shocked state, Rylen immediately launched into a panicked explanation. "Miss Dianne! Y-you're okay. Thank goodness!" He started, "I-I mean, we heard something peculiar earlier and I immediately thought there was a thief running about. I mean, I just encountered a thief earlier this evening! At the market! And he escaped so I thought...Er, so we came down to check..." He refrained from saying that they came down thinking she had been attacked because that would mean telling the Lucifer had come in late. He doubts Lucifer would appreciate being tattled on.

"So...was it you who made the noise earlier, Miss Dianne?" Rylen asked hesitantly.

Merda! He cursed silently, The first time I get use these old tools in years and I end up finding trouble. He thought then recall and old memory when he and Loki used the lock picking tools in the Alexandria Mansion. Balthazar always chased them down from their adventures. Sometimes with Kisara in tow.

"Well trouble always finds us." He muttered to himself and sighed with relief that Rylen didn't tell Dianne that he came a little pass curfew time. Lucifer showed his charming smile to Dianne, even women of their prim can't resist the allure of a Salvatore man. That is what his father said to him and Loki when they were little boys.

"I apologize for that Miss Dianne." He did a small polite bow and stood up straight after. "As my friends said, we heard a noise and went down to investigate it. To be sure that it was not the thief that Rylen encountered earlier this evening."

Dianne stared at Lucifer with obvious doubt before digesting what just Rylen said. “The noise…” Dianne thought deep as to what Rylen just said. “Ah! The noise!” She exclaimed the next second and hurried tried to push the two other bodies in front of her, urging the three of them to be inside the dormitory building.

“Don’t go outside. That noise seemed to be not normal at all. We don’t have any big tanks around to make it sound like that. It is better you guys stay indoors while we let the generals handle this if ever it needs any handling.” She said exasperatedly.

“And it is already past curfew, you two.”

"....but..." Rylen started but then faded off quickly. He really didn't know what to say. He knows the generals would be able to handle it if need be...and yet...

"But Ms. Dianne, why don't we help you check it out?" Rylen suddenly blurted out. He flushed slightly but went on, "I mean, what if it's just something inside the dorms? We can help you check it out. The area is big so it would take a while if you're alone...three pairs of eyes are better than one..."

He fidgeted slightly, "if you go to the generals and they find that it was something not even worth their time, you'd be in big trouble." Rylen said nervously, trying to coax Dianne into letting them help.

Dianne looked at Rylen from head to toe, thinking of what she should say next. It’s not that she doesn’t want the trainees to get involved. It’s just that, she was given strict rules to manage and one of them is to keep all trainees inside this shelter once the curfew stroke in the clock.

She sighed. “No. You two are going back.” She said firmly, recalling her days when she was still a soldier, giving instructions to the others as if what she was saying are rules. “That noise is just because of the wind. And we can check things out early in the morning too, which is easier for us.” She said as she ushered the two guys inside the building. “Now, go back to your rooms.”

As Dianne persistently ushered them back to the dorms. Lucifer looked at Rylen and give him a gentle jab with his elbow to grab his attention. "We could sneak out to investigate." He whispered to Rylen. "I am not comfortable of not knowing what or who made that noise. Sure hope that it's not an underwear thief of something."

Rylen's eyes widened as he heard Lucifer's words.

He was torn.

He wanted to follow Dianne's command yet at the same time, he agreed with Lucifer. That he wouldn't be comfortable until he knew for certain what made that sound. Dianne even said that it was an unnatural sound and now she claims it to be just the wind. Rylen knew that she was just trying to ease their worries.

He really wanted to follow Dianne's command and return to his room. It was getting late and they'd need to be up early for training. And yet, what if it was too late to check in the morning? What if the intruder, if there is one, sneaks into their rooms and snuff them all out in their sleep?

That was certainly a sobering thought.

Nodding grimly, Rylen whispered back to Lucifer, "I guess that is also an option...though we'll need to turn out our light so as not to alert Miss Dianne." They'll be roaming around in complete darkness. He didn't really want to think how absolutely idiotic that would be but it was their only choice for they were about to break a rule.
