SQ: Ghosts Within Ground
Location: Dormitory Grounds
Setting: Late night after the Public Baths: A Steamy Gathering

The night was rather cold yet oddly foreboding. And it was another tiring day for Rianne. All she wanted she was to get some good night’s rest, but her head was still aching from the recent accident in the public baths. Taking some Lemon-Ginger tea, had only dulled the pain, but left her listless and unable to sleep. Stargazing had become a hobby for her to pass time, since she had a nice view of the sky from her windows. But tonight was a starless night making her night rather dreary.

Her desk was strewn with notes and two journals, one of which belongs to Daniel. It had been her nightly ritual to try and decipher, her brother's coded research. “Maybe I should just tire myself out with this again...” Rianne muttered to herself. So far she was only able to decode parts that correlates to crafting and demons.

"Demon gate somewhere beyond Dafentall lands... Demon parts... Crafting... Demon weapon..." Rianne cried out of frustration. "I barely understand anything written in this!"

She had always known her close relatives, the House of Fredeliz and the House of Cruciane, would go as far to bend morals for their research. "To push beyond the boundaries and the known, all for the betterment of Altrus." was a common saying to them. It would still sometimes give chills down her spine thinking of the forces their families had been meddling with.

"Demons... " Rianne muttered, while tracing the demon's outline in her notes. "I shouldn't be surprised, if I see a ghost anymore. Maybe if we capture one, I bet they will definitely be happy to get one for research purposes..."

Livi chuckled with no one noticing as Rianne handed the light to Dianne. 'Well, even she would also need to keep her other hand free from distraction.'

She analyzed what Dianne had said and thought 'Hmm even though there are only bushes and nothing seems to be in that place but since she possibly saw a shadow, there might be something we can find there.' They were given a choice on where they should go to next.

"We can go and recheck the area. There may be some clues to our intruder." she answered. If it was someone, they might have left behind some indication of their presence or maybe dropped something from their person. There was also the possibilities of some lost animals.

"What do you think, Rianne?" she turned to her. She may have a better plan for them so she wanted to ask for her confirmation.

Rianne simply nodded at Livi's suggestion. She walked in front of Dianne, and the silently proceeded towards the direction of the bushes. Her small frame was blocking enough of the dim light, that it won't signal anyone in front of them that they are there.

As long as we don't reveal ourselves too much, we still have the element of surprise against whatever it is... Rianne mused while being full alert on her surroundings. While keeping tabs of Dianne and Livi's presence behind her.

Rounding up in the corner, while getting nearer the bushes, Rianne noticed a silhouette quickly gliding on the ground. Startled by sudden rush of wind, made her duck on the ground.

Verrekt![1] What the hell?! Rianne bracing the impact of her fall closed as her eyes, as her forearms prevented her face from hitting the ground. There's no ghost Rianne!!! There's a logical reason for this! Now get up there and defend yourself! She mentally tried ordering herself. But she was still reeling from the headache that proceeded after her impact, leaving her immobile for the time being.

Rianne ducking all of a sudden surprised Livi so she instantly rushed to where she was hoping Dianne would also follow as well. "Are you ok, Rianne?" she asked as she rushed to her side. Seeing that her head seemed to be aching she didn't move her for now and let her sit down. She went near the bushes to check what she could have seen.

The light source was a bit far so she couldn't clearly see. Livi went closer holding her greatsword with both hands ready to swing. However she was careul, since she might accidentally hack an innocent bystander, if there was any. Livi made saw something by the bushes. 'There seems to be some glowing orbs and some chirping sounds?.' Resting the sword on the ground she beckoned Dianne to come closer.

"Lady Dianne" she called "could you please come closer. I think there's something here." She needed Dianne and the light so they can check if this is what they were looking for.

Rianne was still wincing from her headache, and decided to sit for a bit. Until she heard Livi calling for Dianne, who was still a good distance away from either her or Livi. Barely seeing Livi's figure in the dark didn't stop Rianne walking over towards her direction.

What did Livi saw? Rianne wondered.

As she got closer to the bush and Livi, she heard a very low chirping. Realizing it was a very familiar sound she quickly jumped in the bush. Hoping to get the source of the sound.

Aha! I knew it this chirp sounded familiar! Rianne smiled. As she felt something feathery eluded her grasp in her hands. "Come on little one. I won't harm you." She said in a very low sing-song voice. Trying to shove herself deeper into the bush, blindly trying to grab the creature inside it. Struggling for a bit longer, she had finally grab what she was aiming. "Aw!" She nearly yelped as her hands were stabbed with something sharp. Oh no you won't! As she felt another poke in her hand, she quickly grab the culprit of the annoying jabs. Safely securing her captives, she slowly back track herself out of the bushes and she turned to face Livi and Dianne as well.

"I recognized their low chirps..." she murmured. In Rianne's arms she held, two very rare Albino silver-wing owlets. The owlets' feathers shimmered, while their eyes reflectively glowed from the light of the small candle lamp. "I doubt these two are the culprits we are looking for..." She stated while clutching the two owlets close chest, and showing them off to Livi and Dianne to see.

Dianne stifled a gasp when she saw the small trainee suddenly duck on the ground. Stupidly, she half expected to see a ghost jump out of the bushes towards Rianne's unprepared form. But when no ghostly apparition appeared, she relaxed once again.

She quickly followed as Livi called for her to bring the light. She curiously watched on as Rianne rummaged for something in the bushes. When she finally emerged, Dianne couldn't help but coo in delight at what Rianne held in her arms. "Aww! How cute!" Dianne giggled softly as she reached her free hand towards the birds, intending to pet them. However, the owls didn't seem too keen on the idea if the pecks her hand received where anything to go by.

Dianne laughed softly as she withdrew her hand. "Fiesty little things." She murmured with a nod. Then she sighed in relief, they were just a bunch of birds after all. "Yes, I doubt it's them too." She agreed as she straightened up and looked around. "So then, the sound I heard might really have come from inside the building after all."

She brought the lamp up again as she inspected their immediate area. There were just bushes and trees but then again who knows what could be hiding behind them? Maybe they should check one by one before returning inside? Decisions, decisions...

Just as she was about to turn back to the girls and ask for their opinion, out of the corner of her eye, she saw a shadow dart quickly behind the curtain of the window nearest to them. It may have been just her imagination too but she thought, for a second, she saw an eye peek at them from behind the curtains.

She let out a startled yelp and fell on her rump. Thankfully, she had managed to keep a proper hold of the lamp and saved their only light source.

With shaky finger, she pointed to the window, "I--!!! I s-saw someone there!" Dianne squeaked frightfully. Screw appearances, she didn't care anymore if the trainees find out that she was spooked. That was just too spooky for her. It was almost midnight, it's too dark and the night was cold! She just wanted to lay in her bed and sleep until morning. But if she did that and General Equiste finds out, she'd get it.

Which was she more afraid of? A ghost or General Equiste?

But it really didn't take her more than a mere second to answer that though. Of course she feared General Equiste more.

She shook her head and blinked hard before getting back to her feet. "If I found out it's just one of your fellow trainees, they are really going to get it from me!" Dianne ranted as she tried to salvage her pride.

"L-let's get back inside." She told the two girls before hurrying back to the front door.

It was wide open.

Dianne stopped abruptly and whirled back to look at the girls who had followed her, "did you two leave the door open...? You did right?" She asked, trying to keep her voice from sounding too hysterical.

Livi was relieved to see that it was just a harmless little creature and wasn't what they were looking for. 'Nothing seems to be around here.' she thought as she looked around. It seems that what they were looking for was really inside the building.

Dianne was frightened as she said that she saw someone. "What!? Who or what could that be?" she exclaimed. She immediately followed after Dianne who was in a hurry to go back inside. Dianne's next question however shocked her.

Livi was the last one to exit before they went to check the bushes. She tried to remember if she did close the door or not. "I-I'm not sure. But I think I only left it half open. Not this wide though. Could someone have entered?". Someone could have entered without them noticing because the door was not closed properly. 'That someone must have been what Dianne saw while we were outside.' she thought.

She gripped her sword tightly with her two hands as she looked at Dianne and the Rianne. "Who could it be? Let's go check it out." she gulped as she prepared herself for whatever they may find.

Rianne's joy of finding the two rare owlets was short lived. As Dianne had suddenly startled them, having seen something that frightened the dormitory head out of her propriety. Saw who?! Rianne returned her focus towards her human companions that were running back to the dorms front door.

Unable to leave to owlets, to fend for themselves in their fallen nest. Rianne pulled of the sash of her night clothes, and turning it into a sling. She snuggly place the birds in makeshift sling and carried it like a handbag on her shoulder. She quickly covered the distance between her and Livi. She was welcomed by the sight of the front door being wide open.

I don't remember Livi leaving the door this wide... Unless someone entered while we were outside... Remembering that she saw a silhouette gliding on the ground earlier, made her blood run cold. No, it couldn't be... There's no proof yet of such thing...

She nodded at Livi's suggestion. Tightly griping her rapier, she followed Livi. Swallowing her fear, she tightly secured the sling on her shoulder, and noticed that the owlets had quieted down. I hope they felt secured inside there... Even though their chirps we actually barley audible, she was worried they would spook their intruder.

If there is a ghost here, I really hope the legends of these birds are true then... A small voice in her head hoped. She heard stories of these owl flying into the night capturing souls of the dead and carrying them to the underworld. Though I think people might have mistaken them as ghosts. Seeing how their plumage would give off an eerie sheen when reflecting light...

Stop scaring yourself with ghosts Rianne! She mentally scolded herself. Focusing on Dianne, she sheepishly asked, "Lady Dianne, would you mind leading the way...? I'm still unable to familiarize the first floor..." Rianne admitted. After all she barely had the time to explore the dormitory after talking to General Equiste the other day. "Don't worry we will follow beside you." She tried to give Dianne a reassuring smile.

Taking a deep breath in an effort to calm her frazzled nerves, Dianne slowly approached the front door. She raised her arm holding the light higher as she looked around. There weren't really anything amiss. No shadows moved as she heard the girls come up behind her.

She frowned. This was getting ridiculous! She started to doubt everything she had heard and thought she'd seen. Maybe she was just tired? But the girls had heard the sound she had heard as well.

Groaning in exasperation, Dianne brought a hand to her temple, feeling a headache coming up. "We should check on the mess hall." Dianne said to the girls. "That's where I saw someone earlier...well, I think I saw someone..."

With that said, Dianne started walking towards the direction of the mess hall in the western part of the dormitory. 'It was just a big room with several tables and chairs, there wasn't really anything interesting in it...' She thought with a frown.

Opening the doors that would lead into the mess hall, Dianne turned to see if the girls had followed her. "Keep close to me gi--Ahh!!" She yelped in shock as she unexpectedly tripped on something that made a loud clang as she fell on it. Unfortunately, the fall caused their only light to extinguish, immediately drowning them in darkness.

Livi was paying to attention to her immediate surroundings, sometimes trying to look at the dark areas. She has kept a fairly close distance to Dianne with Rianne at other side of her.

She couldn't react in time as Dianne tripped on something unknown to her. "Lady Dianne!" she shouted "Are you ok?" Without the light, Livi couldn't dare to move even a single inch. "Rianne, how about you?" she can only ask how they were doing. "Uhm, as much as I'd like to stay close to the two of you, I might have to ask that you try to stay away from me." she gulped at her words. "I can't see properly and I don't want the two of you to be hurt by my greatsword so I will just stay still here." she said as tears had started to form in her eyes.

Even though she was scared, she doesn't want to put them in any danger. So she had to choose to let them go and have them leave her, for awhile. Rather than they all stay in one place with no chance of light. For their sake, she was willing to brace the darkness.

'No! Please don't leave me! It's so dark! I can't see! Help!' she screamed in her head 'But I'd rather they do not come near me at this state. I do hope they can find a new light soon.'

"I-I'd have to l-leave it to you two for another source of l-light, please." she said shakily as she tried holding back the tears.

Rianne was closely following Dianne. Trying to focus her senses and attention towards her surroundings. But her thoughts kept replaying the silhouette she saw on the ground when they were outside. Trying to make sense of what she saw, made her lose focus on her surrounding. Distracted by her thoughts, it was too late for Rianne to react by the time Dianne had fallen, and with Dianne's fall their only light source was extinguished. Anxiety was evident in Livi's voice as she called out to her and Lady Dianne in the darkness. Swallowing the lump that had formed in her throat, she answered in her calmest voice possible "I'm fine...". In hopes of not worrying the younger kid, Rianne took another deep breathe to calm herself, before she added "Lady Dianne please continue to stay down, we can't afford you standing up and hurting yourself with Livi's great sword, which might just be hanging somewhere above you. And Livi... uhhh stand guard over her... I'll go find another light..."

Going down on all fours, Rianne blindly search for her candle lantern. She could hear the owlets' cry of discomfort from her sudden movements. Realizing they could be her eyes for danger. Hoping the bird will alert her if there are other things amiss, that she should be worried about. She blindly pulled out the candle from her candle lantern, placing it in her makeshift sling and then pulled out one of owlets. "I'm sorry little one but I'll need your help. Please bear with me." She whispered to the owlet. She placed it inside the lantern, which was big enough to accommodate and give the little chick some breathing space.

Rianne crawled away from Livi and Dianne in all fours. Using her elbows as support for her crawl; she was holding her rapier up like a horizontal bar in front of her. But hanging in the middle of the rapier, was the lantern with the owlet caged inside it. Usually she would be afraid showing her eccentric ways of solving problems. Especially now, "How unbecoming of a Lady!" would be her Grandmother Irina's words, if she saw her like this. But this was an emergency, they needed light, and her grandmother was nowhere near Antar to scold her for this.

The birds chirped with discomfort from the light impact of bumping into a hard object. Rianne stood up realizing that it was a wall in front of her. Hoping that the wall she had hit might lead her to the kitchen, across the Mess Hall's main door. She felt her way across the wall till she reached the door. Feeling the doorknob unlocked. "Are you two still okay there?" She asked in a not so loud voice. While trying to push open the oaken doors that would lead to the kitchen, she declared. "I'll search for something to light the candle with, in the kitchen."

With Rianne volunteering to find a new source of light, Livi breathed a sigh of relief. "Ok I'll just... stand guard here. Not moving. Just standing." while keeping her greatsword leaning on her shoulder. She did not know where Dianne was so kept her sword up.

"Yes, I'm fine. Lady Dianne should be fine as well, right?" she replied and asked Dianne for confirmation.

'I hope Rianne can find a light soon. This... this darkness, I can't... take it anymore.' she thought as she involuntarily shivered. She just realized how cold the night was. Her senses became sharper since she couldn't see clearly anymore. Any low audible sounds she could hear but chose to not pay any heed to them.

Dianne heard the trainees but didn't say anything in response as she was busy trying to feel for the thing that she had tripped into.

"Wait..." She murmured after a few seconds. "I know what this is." She whispered as she ran her hands over the cold surface, feeling the ridges and etches on it and its general shape. "I think I found what made that sound." Dianne announced to Livi.

"It's just this stupid suit. It has fallen over." She said, frustration coloring her voice. It was just a stupid suit after all and she just had to act all coward-like in front of these trainees.

Livi was puzzled by Dianne's silence and just waited for her reply. "Suit?" Livi repeated. "Oh, did you mean tripped over the suit on the way?" she clarified.

'But wait, she did say that it made the sound?' she thought. "The suit is what caused the sound?" she continued.

"We should wait for Rianne to find a new light. I'm not sure where you are right now, Lady Dianne. It's best if we stay still for now"

It seems that the mysterious sound they heard came from a suit that fell over. Livi waited for the light before she can help Dianne up or verify that there was a fallen suit nearby.

"Rianne! Were you able to find a light?" she yelled.

For some unknown reason, Rianne could barely hear what Dianne and Livi had said. As the once unlocked yet unmoving door suddenly gave way to her making her unbalanced and nearly fall. She quickly regained her balance found herself inside the kitchen with the door silently but suddenly closed on her. She kept banging the door to no avail, as the birds kept chirping in protest with her forceful movements.

"Ah right I need light." She calmed down realizing how futile it was for her to blindly hit the door in the darkness. Rummaging around the kitchen, she noticed even in darkness it was a mess. Managing to get to the kiln, she was able to grab hold of a flint rock. Quickly making a fire in the stove, the light spread throughout the room, illuminating the ransacked state of the kitchen. Pots and pans were up turned and the sack of potatoes had been dug out of their contents. It puzzled her, how nobody had heard what has happened in the kitchen. This would've been quite a racket. But we only heard one loud noise... or was it really only one??

Rianne ran as fast as she could towards the door, after lighting her candle and putting back the owlet in her makeshift sling bag. She kept banging the door open but it won't budge on her somehow. "I-I can't open the damn door!!" She shouted. Still turning the unlocked doorknob and hitting the door with her left hand. The birds keep on protesting at her movements. Rianne wasn't scared to say the least, rather she was rational. She needed to alert her companions that something wasn't right. Someone or something had upturned the kitchen and 'it' may still be out there prowling in the darkness.

It's been a while since Rianne went to get some light in the kitchen. 'Well, it is dark. I hope she doesn't stumble too much in the dark.' she thought.

Then she heard a loud banging at the kitchen door with Rianne shouting that she couldn't open the door. "Rianne!?" With here banging the door, she thought that she might be in trouble. It was a good thing that Rianne had light up the kitchen. Using the light escaping from the door gaps, Livi faintly saw Dianne's figure. "Lady Dianne, I'm going after Rianne." Then while slowly navigating in the dark she reached the door. She tried turning the door but she couldn't open it even though it was unlocked.

Livi worried and then banged at the door. "Rianne! Are you okay in there?" she shouted. Then facing to where Dianne was "Lady Dianne, what's going on? I can't open the door and it's not even locked!" she panicked.

Dianne stood up slowly as she heard Livi go after her fellow trainee who was banging on the kitchen door. Dianne rubbed her temple, if this goes on any further they'd wake the rest of the trainees up.

"Alright, hold on." Dianne called out as she slowly walked away from the metal suit, not wanting to trip again. "It might be stuck again that stupid door." She grumbled as she reached Livi.

Dianne gripped the doorknob and then, with great strength, heaved the door up until she felt it slightly nudged up. Then she turned the knob and pushed the door open to reveal Rianne.

"It's just stuck. The hinges needs to be repaired." Dianne said simply. "Now then, it's getting late and I am almost certain that the source of that noise was that metal suit that fell on the floor. You girls should go back to your rooms now." Dianne instructed. "You'll need to have an early start tomorrow."

Livi who was scared at her wit's end to Rianne's situation suddenly calmed and couldn't help out but blurt out "What?" Dianne opened the door with a bit of a trick which left Livi to be dumbfounded. "Oh... I see..." The door was only in need of repairs and both girls had the worst timing.

"..And the sound was actually just from the metal suit?" she looked to where the suit was then back to the kitchen where she looked for Rianne. "Rianne, are you ok? The sound was just actually from the metal suit." Livi laughed. The mysterious metal clanging they heard was only the metal suit which had fallen.

It would seem that the night is ending. The mysterious sound was found and the door was just actually faulty. "But wait! What about the mysterious figure you saw, Lady Dianne?" she turned to Dianne with her eyes wide.

Dianne looked away upon hearing Livi's question. Even though the light was dim, she didn't want to risk showing her flushed and shamed face to these young trainees.

Clearing her throat, Dianne pretended to look back towards the door leading to the mess hall even though it was just as dark as they'd left it. "It might have been my eyes playing tricks on me after all." She finally admitted.

"When it is dark, the mind tends to make you see things that aren't even there." Dianne said in a wistful voice. She smiled bitterly as she remembered her time in the field. Long nights awaiting for an attack that never came, and when they least expected...they come in droves.

Dianne looked back at the trainees. "Well then, it would seem that we have solved this mystery. Thank you for your help but it is now time for you to return to your rooms." She smiled slightly before her expression turned stern. "Now don't make this a habit you hear? This is a one time thing only. If I find you out past curfew, I will make you sleep outside."

She stepped back and gestured towards the direction of the female dorm stairway. "Run along now. And oh, Rianne, let those owls out. Pets are not allowed in the dorms."

Rianne just stared a bit dumbstruck. Was the door was simply stuck. But how could it not unstuck when both her and Livi were trying to open it from both sides. And when Dianne swung it so easily as if it never got stuck in the first place. Feeling another headache approaching, she decided to swat away her other inquiry. "Metal suit? But why did it fell down in the first place to make the noise...?" Rianne muttered, but never directed her question to Dianne.

"Run along now. And oh, Rianne, let those owls out. Pets are not allowed in the dorms." She heard Dianne' request. All Rianne could do was nod in response. If she could, she would've smuggled the birds into her room. But rules were rules. It was getting late, so she'll just leave the owlets in some safe area for tonight.

"I'll take them out to the backyard then." Rianne stated. Remembering there was a tree nearby her room. And one particular tree, seemed to be uncannily framed by her window, when view from her bed. At least if she left the owlets there, she could keep her eyes on them, from time to time. She could not help but request her fellow trainee for some help. Since would she most likely climb up the tree, to ensure that the birds will be safe. And she'll need a little bit of light.

"Livi could you assist me with some light?"

Livi's inquiry about the mysterious figure Dianne saw was just brushed off as an imagination. 'Well it is dark... the wonders of the human mind, I guess.' she too just shrugged off the idea. Dianne had wanted them to call it a night and to return to their rooms. "Yes, Lady Dianne." she replied.

Dianne had also instructed Rianne to let out the owls she was holding on to. So Rianne asked Livi for help in bringing the light. "Ok, I'll hold the light for you." she replied to Rianne. Holding the greatsword still in one hand leaning on her shoulder, she held the light on her left.

"We'll just let the little owls out then, Lady Dianne." she said as she lead the way outside to light the path for the both of them. The last task for the night is letting the owls free outside then they can finally rest for the night.
