Setting:

After getting off the trainee's ship and asking for the direction to the Equiste house.

Locke's stride was steady as he walked through the unfamiliar roads and buildings. It hasn't been that long time since he had a hand in his whenever he passed through crowds of people but he felt the emptiness in his palms. It was like a maze to him. No matter where he walked, nothing looked comforting. The unfaltering pace he had seemed to slow down with the surfacing of an irrational fear but the reason for his walk was to hopefully ease this. Gripping his empty right hand tightly, he resolved himself again and kept moving.

After landing in the port town and finalizing his registration, Locke wanted to get a more firm foothold in the city. In an unknown land, one of the reasons for adventurers falling to scams and hoaxes was because of the lack of information. Knowledge was indeed a sort of power and Locke knew he needed to borrow it from someone.

But the question was who? Who would be the best option to ask? The apple vendor in the streets would not suffice, nor the mere guard who was standing watch.

No, Locke didn't need just anyone who knows a thing or two. Half usable information would just hinder his progress or put him or his search in dire straits.

And so, after thinking about these regards, Locke made the decision to ask the town nobles. He asked the people who had been at the port about them and from there he knew that there were three prominent houses in the town. One house was managing the agricultural development, one was in charge of military training, and the other was in charge of finance.

As Locke kept walking past the grand buildings and businesses of the town, he deeply wanted to have a discussion of finance to the house that was managing it. While agriculture was not a particularly vital part of his trade, he was also interested in the lay of the land.

But he did not come here for mere profit. He had something more important in his sights, and that was the house of Equisite; the house in charge of the military.

Its going to be fine.

He whispered to himself as he finally reached a huge gate with the help of his mental map, which he got from asking the locals.

His knees felt weak. Was it because of nervousness or excitement, that he doesn't know. He also did not know the formalities needed to talk to a noble. He was clueless as to what to do, but he did have an idea. One that will definitely get the attention of someone from the house, at the very least.

Locke steeled himself, banishing his fears and unease to the best of his abilities, as he spoke out in his most boisterous voice, "Might I have an audience with head of the Equiste family?"

Ileana trudged down the familiar steps that leads to the entrance of the House of Equiste. Apparently, Rylen has managed to deliver her message [1] to Eclair (without causing him trauma, she hopes) and predictably, Eclair was not a happy camper. She knows why Eclair was calling for her to come to her House and unfortunately, it won't simply be for a happy tea time.

She pouted to herself, her already slow steps becoming even slower. Maybe she should just ignore the 'invitation' and hide for a few days.

But then again, she wasn't nearly crazy enough to push Eclair's buttons too much. With a sigh, she decided to just weather through whatever Eclair has in stall for her. Too late now anyway, she could already see the gates of the House of Equiste.

But something else caught her eyes. She noticed a person walking towards the gates with a purposeful air. She couldn't see his face because he has his back towards her. He stopped walking when he came in front of the gates and seemed to freeze as though he was thinking of something. But after a few seconds, she heard him call out.

"Might I have an audience with head of the Equiste family?"

Curious, Ileana quickened her steps until she was near the man. Smiling politely, she then answered, "hello, who might you be? If you are here to assassinate Eclair, I might help you." She said jokingly, thinking about her own impending doom.

Locke turned back to the direction of the voice, the one that made such a remarkable remark. In his sights was a woman he did recognize, either from memory or from what the people told him about the Equiste's head.

A lot of ideas rushed to his head. One of them was a subtle fear that she was a murderer but Locke knew enough that no killer worthy of his dagger would proclaim his kill before a body laid dead. Most likely, her "assassination" plan was a joke.

Locke still knew not of the woman's intentions but he was not going to sit back and play the fool.

From mere looks, the woman had an air of authority, despite how lazy it appeared to be. Locke observed her expression to find a listlessness in her eyes, but he was unsure as of the reason why. One thing he did notice about her, though, was her carefree attitude. Considering the joke he had just let out, one Locke would think would warrant a beheading in his lands, he understood that the woman standing before him was supposedly close to someone inside the house.

Giving out his best merchant's smile, he spoke in a calm demeanor, "No, no, not at all." He gave a quick bow to give his respects before he continued. "The name is Locke Cole and I am looking for the head of the Equiste family."

A fool would then give out his intentions, being drawn into the conversation. But Locke was not that kind of fool, and instead of answering why he was standing in front of the gates, he returned her a question of his own with a matching smile that could charm any town lass with ease. "Assassinations are a hefty crime to commit. If I may ask, what is a beautiful lady such as yourself really doing here?"

'Huh, what a formal guy.' Ileana thought noncommittally. The name caught her attention though, she could vaguely recognize it. 'Hmm....Locke...Cole...Locke, Cole.' She turned the name over and over in her mind.

And then it suddenly dawned on her. "Oh!" She exclaimed, "you're one of the new trainees!" She said cheerfully, happy to have solved the mystery. "I'm Ileana, one of the Generals," she paused, "er, you may or may not have seen me...I sort of bailed out halfway through the welcoming event." She laughed sheepishly. "Thanks for signing up with us though." She told him gratefully.

"Now you said something about meeting with Eclair? I guess it's fine." Ileana added, turning to open the gates without further ado. "Follow me. I'll take you to her." She beckoned, turning to walk up the path leading to the mansion.

Locke was taken aback by her exclamation. He didn't expect her to know about him, much more for her to actually be the head of the house of Amedea. More than anything, he did not expect a noble who holds the agricultural development of the kingdom to be simply walking around.

The fact that the family head was a female was something Locke had a hard time grasping as well. Locke knew that nobles needed to uphold their family names, and in turn the males are normally the ones who had to carry the line.

But Locke did not see a lie in her eyes. Her expression was clear and her demeanor was not a threatening one, therefore he decided to trust her words.

She could've easily kill me if rumors were indeed true anyway. He thought to himself. He also knew that this was a perfect opportunity to acquaint himself with the nobles of the kingdom and was not going to let this opportunity pass.

"Aye, you are not wrong," he said as she looked at her intently. "Indeed I have enlisted. And I also wanted to meet with the family head of the Equistes. If you do not mind, I shall take your offer then."

At that moment, Locke walked forward.

Ileana laughed lightly at his words but didn't say anything in response. 'Even Kisa isn't that formal, but then again she doesn't talk much.' She thought to herself.

She heard him follow her as she lead him into the house, through several doors and hallways. The Equiste house was very big and specifically designed to confuse any intruders. Well, that's what she thought anyway. It was basically the same back at her own mansion.

She knew that Eclair would be in the gardens where they usually sit for tea so that's where she was headed. She quickened her pace as she neared the door that would lead her into the gardens.

"We're almost there." She alerted Locke as she grabbed the doorknob. She slowly opened the door and peeked out side. Her eyes fell on the two women enjoying their snacks. Deciding to just get it over and done with, she opened the door fully and stepped out.

"Sorry I'm late." She announced, plastering an innocent smile on her face. "I met one of the recruits outside, Eclair. He said he wants to see you." She reported.

"Well," Locke was at a loss for words at the sight of two more women eating at their leisure some food that he could hardly recognize. "This was not something I was expecting," he continued to whisper under his breath.

The walk towards the garden was already an amazement by itself, with Locke almost being lost more than once but when he saw the general Ileana's response, he could only guess that the two were the other heads of the houses.

But he did not have time to stammer with his words. He needed to ascertain the predicament he was in. At the worst case scenario, he was disrupting a meeting between nobles, although it might not look like it.

With a bow, he put on his merchant's smile and spoke out, "Pardon my intrusion. My name is Locke Cole and I seek general Equiste's wisdom. I am not bothering you ladies, am I?"

Eclair's brow twitched at the cheerful voice of Ileana and at the same time, at the thought that work has, again, disrupted her once-in-a-while holiday while sipping her cup. She turned to the Ileana’s direction sharply and was about to launch words of excuses she could think of for today but held her breath when she saw a familiar face.

“Locke Cole?” Eclair asked while reviewing his application inside her head. Indeed, a travelling merchant. It’s already rare enough for Altrus to receive travelers since the continent’s boundaries are usually stopped ever since the rampant of the demons. But who knew that one could.

Her attention switched to Ileana’s face, seeing her smile. Eclair's lips moved this time while thinking how this brat can shove off the things she had neglected and dare to come acting innocent – especially this was the “call” that Eclair have prepared especially for her. Knowing Ileana’s nature, a simple scolding will not make the red-haired girl show her face to Eclair. Knowing this, she made up the small tea party. But of course, the heir for the House of Amedea is not that stupid either not to know how to read between the lines.

Eclair threw a glare at Ileana’s direction silently telling, ‘You’re going to get something later,’ to her. And hoping that she understands her situation being one of the generals, somehow.

The head of the combat house went back to her business self and smiled to Locke’s direction. “Oh, you’re not really disturbing anything.” She lied as a reply to his question. Although she can’t turn all evil now on a trainee that’s in need of her help either. “Rather, I should call for another set to be laid out for you.” She continued then rang the bell near her hand, signaling to call one of her attendants. “By means of wisdom, is this about the Order? Or the companion that you are trying to search for?” Recalling how Locke’s application looked like, it were the only reasons she could think of.

Unless, he’s here to ask about one of the girls within her line of sight but that’s just close to impossible.

"You rang Lady Eclair?" Eclair's attendant appeared before them, He observed that there was an unexpected guest, from the look that his young mistress is giving, he knows what she's requesting.

"I'll fetch another set then." He swiftly left and a few moments later placed a new set for Locke right next to Kisara. Who is idly sipping her tea but with slight frown on her face, knowing the peace and quiet of tea time is about to be disrupted.

"if that will be all I'll take my leave Lady Eclair." The attendant said. "Just ring the bell if you need me."

With that the attendant left them in the garden.

Locke was having a hard time taking things in. It seemed like everyone already knew who he was despite him being a complete nobody. The fact that the the general in front of him was a woman, despite being the head of the military was something he was trying to comprehend. It didn't help the fact that she could casually say his purpose as if everyone memorized everything about his application form. And then there was general Ileana, who had the same hair color as his missing companion, but he dared not ask about this matter. It was a good thing that Locke was able to manage his merchant's smile as well as he could or else he would've been too vulnerable to the ladies in front of him.

But, he needed to focus at the situation at hand. From the actions of the lady general, Locke understood that trouble was brewing. He really was interrupting something, but as to what it was, he couldn't know.

As the attendant made his way out, Locke gathered his thoughts. He so badly wanted to ask whether the other people in the room knew any information about his companion but he knew being hasty would be a mistake.

"I am honored that you remember my records," Locke started. "And indeed, my missing companion is a matter of dire straits, but that is a question that could be answered later."

Locke looked at the other girl he was not acquainted with, already guessing who she was. It really did seem like a general's meeting he had barged into, and he knew it would be bad to overstay his welcome. He knew not what the real demeanor of the ladies in front of him were, but if it was any close to his missing companion, it would be far too troublesome to incur.

'The order' was something Locke was unfamiliar with. His original goal was to gather information but since he did commit himself to the military, he knew it would do him well to ask the vital matters before his personal ones.

"Instead, I would indeed like to know about this 'order' you speak off. I'm not a local myself but I find it odd how you would accept someone who's not directly affiliated with your cause. It is mere curiosity but, what is this order?"

Eclair looked at Locke blankly. She tried to blink her surprise but it seems it wasn’t enough when her head turned to her tea partner in her front with a tilted head. Trying to take time to register Lock’s question, Eclair placed her cup back to the table and run along things in her mind.

Locke is a merchant with a purpose of finding something as said on his application. He’s a traveler and not a natural born Altrus so it’s normal that he will have questions concerning the continent itself. Who approved his application again? She tried to recall but since there are only two options for that, she scanned deep in her memory. Edward… huh… She’s not honestly sure if this could be trouble or not but at the mean time, as the way Altrus are and it’s fighting number, they needed more as it is.

She then turned back to the one who threw the question, already with recovered smile. “It’s a wonder why would someone as you, who came from outside of Altrus’ borders to apply as one of the trainees when you don’t know so much about this place.” Eclair's grin widened as she tries to sound convincing as she can. They can’t really loose one man now, can they? “Why don’t you come and sit down and let’s have a talk?” She turned to Ileana as well and can’t help for her look to become sour. “And you too, Ileana. It would be rude to our guest if you keep on standing. Right?” Eclair's head sweetly turned to the one in front of her tea table at the last word, trying to lighten things up even a little while honestly thinking if she should be so honest with a trainee about Altrus’ current and dire condition – especially with someone who came from another land.

Kisara already knew the reason behind why Eclair arranged this small tea party. Because when Ileana ditched them when they received the new batch of recruits, she practically interrogated the new guy whom Ileana dragged off just to 'talk'. I think Rylen was his name. Recalling his application sheet, she was surprise that he has a big family.

Being an only child can be lonely. The only sibling like relationship she had experience as child is with the Salvatore twins but even back then sometimes it is not like the brothers and sister kind of relationship. Hearing Ileana's annoyingly cheerful voice is her sign that the peaceful tea party is about to end and she'll get what's coming for her from Eclair.

Kisara didn't need to come though but she went since she wants to see her fellow general get scold by their former mentor, now co-general. And the snacks that the Equiste House chef makes are divine. Kisara grabbed her 5th french macaroon as Ileana starts to make an excuse on why she ditched them.

What she didn't expect is the tall man behind Ileana. Oh no. We have an unexpected guest. Knowing Eclair, she doesn't like surprises. She slightly tilted her head towards the man as he approached them and made his formal greeting. At least he has manners and know proper etiquette. She glance him from head to toe. It's Locke Cole, one of the older trainees, other than Lucifer. She thought and recalled what Lucifer did to her at the first meeting of the trainees. She made a mental note to give him a hard time for the One-on-One Cell.

Locke was taller than average and with his slicked back hairstyle makes him looks older than his 22 years of age. Recalling his application in memory, he came from a family of traveling merchants. That's explains why with the not so obvious-to-some-but-obvious-to-her business smile he just displayed. I've made deals with a lot of scheming merchants with father before and even after I took the House Seat. Observation is second nature to Kisara, it makes it easier for her to come with a plan on any situation.

When the attendant left after putting a new set for Locke next to her. The tension rise up a little on Locke's question. He doesn't have a clue on what he is applying for huh. Kisara hid her smirk in her tea cup as she pretend to sip. He is in for a big surprise. Knowing her two fellow generals, Locke will have the ride of his lifetime during training.

The look on Eclair's face brooked no argument. Ileana knows that face. She'd seen it many times before whenever she does something that Eclair disapproves. She decided to play nice for now.

Besides, it seems that they have another problem at hand.

She looked at the man she brought, the disbelief on her face plain to see. "You seriously don't know?" Ileana asked, although the question was more rhetorical rather than an actual one. She shook her head, her curls following the movement. "I can't believe you don't know." She wondered if she should cut him some slack. After all, message-relaying is quite hard especially to far flung villages so it might not be surprising if some people have not received the news. Even more so if they were a foreigner.

Sighing, she took her seat, before waving a hand to the other seat. "Come sit, Mr. Cole. I think you'll need it."

Whoever accepted his application will surely be on the receiving end of Eclair's ire. Ileana bit her lip, trying to keep a giggle in. 'Well, misery does love company.'

This is bad... Locke thought as he sensed the tension rising. Did I make a mistake?

But whatever his actions caused, it was far too late to undo them. All he could do was play along with whatever he could do.

His knees fell weak. The fear of failing in before everything started ran through him as though a cold bucket of water was splashed all over his face.

I guess it should've been common knowledge? He tried to think. I guess things really worked differently here. In my land, the lords would never reveal to the public why the military was being mobilized after all.

For a moment, Locke hesitated in taking the seat. His merchant's intuition wanted him to make a smile and leave just to prevent any more trouble from happening. In front of him sat the three generals and all of them could make his life hell, to the opposite of what part of his original goal was. In the end, he relented. With a bow of gratitude, he took the seat and breathed in deeply.

"I apologize for my ignorance," he started. "You see, when I made my way here, I was in a frantic rush. I knew no one and it took a while before I got used to the ways of the land. It never dawned on me about the regards of the kingdom."

His words were clear but beneath his merchant's mask, he was uncertain. But there was one question he needed to get off his mind.

"But before that, Miss Amedea," Locke looked at the red headed general. "If I might ask, is red a common color of hair in this land?"

Ileana blinked at the seemingly random question and consciously reached up to inspect a lock of her hair.

"Hm? Well, now that I think about it, not really." She answered after a few seconds. Most people in Altrus are either fair-haired, dark-haired or brunets. She sees a few red-heads sometimes but they are few and far in between. The only other red-haired people she knew were the Salvatore twins. Even within her family, she was actually the only one to inherit her grandmother's vibrant hair color.

Then she looked at him with a mischievous smile, "when I was young, my mother used to scare me whenever I try to sneak out at night." She started. "She would always say that some people might kill me because they think I'm 'evil incarnate'. Apparently, a long, long time ago, there used to be a lot more red-headed people. However, they have a stigma of being soulless human beings and so, they were hunted down mercilessly." She shrugged and then added, "not sure how true this 'legend' is, but now that I'm older, I'd like to think that the citizens of Altrus are more civilized than that."

She smiled at him politely, "I hope my answer suffices your curiosity, Mr. Cole."

Locke was surprised at her words. The imagery of his companion and the moment they met resurfaced in his memory making him falter a bit. He did not have the opportunity to be dazed and confused, though.

"Is it so? Funny, my red headed companion also went through the same ordeal," Locke replied with a casual smile. He figured giving out this much about himself was not a problem in itself, and if it ever did become one, he trusted he could maneuver himself out of it. He had that much confidence in his conversation abilities, after all.

He then turned to the dark haired woman who seemed to be enjoying her meal. He had a guess who she was, but he wanted to confirm it. Uncertainty can lead to a disaster, and Locke was already in too much of a disastrous predicament as it was. If she was indeed the general of finance, then she'd be harder to read than most people. For now, Locke wanted to save face and know who he was dealing with.

'A merchant only loses when he does not know the ends of each trade.' The words of his former mentor rang through his mind, as if giving him a push in the back.

Despite her young looks, she would surely have had her share of deals and trades. I might be the greenhorn in this regard.

"And can I assume that you are general Alexandria?" he asked her while he wondered if his merchant's smile would be able to fool the financial command of a kingdom.

Oh, he is using that goddamn awful smile again. Kisara thought. To her it is practically annoying for when merchants or traders use that business smile to her when they want to make deals and investments at Altrus. His majesty trusts her with everything about trades and finance in the kingdom and she can easily catch a bad investor by just the one look at the person.

This man, who is almost the same age as the twins, has a lot of experience but not enough to surpass on what she had experience through the years and plus with her father's teachings. Giving her famous frosty smile that made the investors tremble on what will be the turn out of their possible investment.

"You are correct Mr, Cole." She said and set her tea cup down. And with one dark eyebrow raise she added. "You can clear off that business smile of yours Mr, Cole. That won't work on me and I find it rather annoying actually."

Turning to her fellow general, "Eclair, would please passed the teapot." Kisara ask her politely. "I fancy myself another cup."

Eclair knew that Kisara never tried to open up with strangers but she sure also knew that her attitude is also taking its own toll and if not controlled, would affect the other trainees. If only she can handle their number alone, Eclair doesn’t have to risk everything these two girls could do to the system but their presence is highly needed for this to work as well.

“A pot it is then.” Eclair tried to match Kisara’s icy stare although she knew she can never compare. But just to warn the young lady about attitude problems in a slight manner. Giving in to the ice queen's request, she handed over the pot.

She then turned to Locke with a concerned look. “I apologize for what she just said. She could be a little… harsh.” She smiled a little as she tried to get another sip before continuing where she wanted to get back into. “So you say that you are foreign for Altrus and that there are tons that you need to know? Of course, all you have to know for now is that our enemies are the demons. They are the ones that we need to defeat if we want this continent to stay alive as it is or even better – to make it safe for everyone, everywhere.”

Revealing more of the military information outside the Main Base and Antar is definitely out of the question. So basic stuff should suffice for his curiosity and as for the rest, he needs to learn them during training. Eclair thought about it as a good plan.

“That is,” She added and gave Locke a serious look. “You would like this companion of yours to stay safe within our boundaries.”

Using such underhand tactics, the safety of the people in Altrus, was never her forte. In fact, she didn’t want to do it. But everyone knew who is aware of the rampant of their enemies that it was an obvious fact.

Even as the other two generals.

"Do you know about her whereabouts!?" Locke exclaimed.

In a moment before, he was fairly shocked about general Alexandria's words. While it was not uncommon for merchants to mask their intentions with their business facades, it was the first time Locke was called out for it. But he had no time to react to her words before the other general's passed through his ears like thunder.

Demons? he asked himself. Demons are real?

Locke was as confused as ever. He was chasing after fairy tales, but here he was talking about mythical creatures being their opponents. Her mother's image found its way to his mind, but everything he was thinking about shattered when he heard the rest of general Equiste's swords.

'You would like this companion of yours to stay safe within our boundaries.'

The moment Locke heard of that phrase, he lost all composure. His face lost the facade he had been trained to work with and, in front of the other ladies that sat before him, his worrisome front was laid bare. In that moment, unbeknownst to him, he already stood up from his seat and had his palms firmly planted on the table, almost shaking off the cups to the ground.

Realizing he had made a fool out of himself a moment later, he sat back down his seat with an apologetic look.

"I'm sorry," he started. "I did not mean to fool you all. It is true, the main goal I have is to find my companion, and if it costs me an arm and a leg, I won't hesitate to give it for her protection."

Locke, who managed to grab a sense of composure, set his eyes to look directly at general Equisite's. He knew what she said was a sort of bluff but whether or not it was true, he had no idea. Instead, he needed to agree to their terms. He had no authority in this situation, but he was not going to relent everything to them. He wanted to get a bit of an even ground.

"But," he eyed the general, with raw emotion in his eyes. "Only if you indeed know where she is."

Kisara fully expected his reaction after Eclair's statement. The red headed companion of his is the emotional trigger of that fake front that he had shown to them in the beginning.

"You know Mr. Cole." She started as she breath in the sweet aroma of her tea. Shifting her cold golden gaze to him. "Even you try to fool us three, we can still see through you're fake front that you've shown since you interrupted our little gathering."

"Don't underestimate us." shifting herself from her sit just to face him. "Altrus maybe different from where you came from but the women here are equally powerful and supirior as the men."

The scenario that is happening here made Kisara remembered the times when she have to deal with a lot of scheming merchants and investors who underestimated her and trying to make a fool out of her because she was a young woman. Well not all are bad but majority who went to her are rotten to the core. People who wants to exhaust Altrus' resources and finance for their own gain.

Kisara made a mental count to calm herself down. She hated when she let her emotions get the better of her. Like the mental breakdown I had with Loki a fortnight ago.

"But I do hope you keep with that little facade of yours in training." She said and gave a cold smile to him. "Training you will be a challenge and very fun to break."
